Overview
In this role you will deliver a high-level specialist clinical pharmacy service to adults and paediatric oncology/haematology patients, covering inpatients, day-case and outpatient pathways, as well as cancer clinical trials. You will work with the Cancer Services team to develop pathways, support chemotherapy services, and lead on trial-related activities. A focus on safe, effective, and economical use of medicines, staff development, and service improvement will shape your daily impact in a respected NHS trust. This is a band 6β7 level post with opportunities to grow within a multidisciplinary cancer services environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide a high-level specialist clinical pharmacy service to adult and paediatric oncology/haematology patients across inpatients, day case, and outpatients
- Counsel patients on oral anti-cancer medicines and support outpatient chemotherapy services
- Participate in oncology clinics reviewing systemic anti-cancer medicines, monitoring tests, toxicities and radiology
- Lead/participate in ward rounds, MDT meetings and clinical audits to optimise medicines management
- Support clinical trials activities, ensure GCP compliance, and contribute to trial documentation and procedures
- Supervise and develop pharmacy staff, and participate in training for diploma/pharmacy staff
- Contribute to formulary management, risk assessment, and policy development related to systemic anti-cancer treatments
- Support chemotherapy electronic prescribing implementation and maintenance of oncology TTO pre-packs
- Record clinical activity, monitor outcomes, and identify training needs
- Engage in national/local prescribing strategies and service development initiatives
- Prepare documentation for new prescriptions on electronic prescribing systems and trial-related documentation
- Assist in service development, audits, and service improvement projects (CQUINs/QIPPs)
- Liaise with medical staff, nurses, and patients to deliver effective day-case/outpatient cancer services
- Attend consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings
- Participate in paediatric oncology/haematology clinical service as needed
- Provide input to policy/guideline development for systemic anti-cancer treatments
Key requirements
- Clinical pharmacy experience including oncology/haematology
- NHS-related knowledge (NICE, CQC, NHS Digital)
- Experience in service improvement, audit and practice research
- Teaching, supervising and training staff
- UK registration with GPhC and ongoing professional development
- Postgraduate clinical qualification or equivalent knowledge/experience
- Experience with electronic prescribing for chemotherapy (Desirable)
