Overview
In this role you will provide expert emergency medical care as part of a collaborative ED team at St Mary’s Hospital, contributing to high-quality, compassionate patient outcomes. You will teach and mentor nursing staff, junior doctors and medical students, participate in audits and governance, and support professional development and revalidation. The post offers flexible working patterns and opportunities to engage in NHS-wide transformation initiatives through a partnership with Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. You will operate in a dynamic, high‑acuity environment with a focus on service development and patient safety.
Responsibilities
- Teach nursing staff, junior doctors and final year medical students
- Engage in professional development and clinical governance activities, including audits
- Undertake annual appraisal for revalidation
- Share 1.5 SPAs per week for continuing professional development (additional SPAs by agreement)
- Cover duties for absent colleagues and manage exceptional obligations outside rostered duties
- Communicate complex information effectively to patients, staff and the public in challenging situations
Key requirements
- MBBS or equivalent
- Membership/Fellowship with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine
- GMC registration and licence to practice
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine via CCT (within 6 months of interview) or CESR or European Community rights
- Completed a recognised training programme in Emergency Medicine
- High level clinical experience and competence in Emergency Medicine
- Knowledge of current trends in the specialty
- IT skills
- Teaching experience with undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit
- Commitment to developing a high-quality, cost-effective service
- Knowledge of NHS issues and ability to develop services
