Job summaryTo provide expert assistance to the Consultant and Registrar staff in the provision of a highly quality, patient centred service on Ward 34 NASU JCUH and Ward 41 UHNT. The post holder is expected to participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge. They are also expected to act under their own initiative based on their training and current national and local guidelines.The Physician Associate role works alongside the medical team. You will assess and examine patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations, and recommended treatment. You will liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients. A designated Consultant or Registrar will supervise them and will also have individual mentors to oversee their career development.This post work across Neurology and Stroke, under both directorates as part of Ward 34 NASU in particular with some travel to Ward 41 UHNT.The physician associate will be expected to maintain a generalist medical knowledge while also developing expert clinical knowledge of cerebrovascular disease. This provision will initially be predominately work in inpatient wards with a regular TIA outpatient clinic involvement.Main duties of the job The Physician Associate supports a team of Consultants, Registrars, nursing staff and therapists of the Neurology and Stroke Unit (NASU). They will be trained to assess and examine patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations, and recommend treatment. The role involves being a vital member of the NASU team, helping with assessment, diagnosis and management of neurology and stroke patients on the NASU unit, Ward 34. Supervision will be under the direction and guidance of Consultants. The post holder will play an important part in supporting medical staff on ward 34. This involves supporting the on-call consultant with daily ward rounds, neurology and stroke referrals and assisting with hyperacute stroke management. This includes assisting in assessing and help treat patients with reperfusion treatment like thrombolysis There is a requirement to recognise and understand the importance of the multi-disciplinary team in management of patients for rehabilitation, discharge home or palliative care as needed. The post-holder will be accountable for ensuring that patient care is of a high standard at all times. The post holder will develop expertise in managing at stroke follow up under consultant supervision. The post-holder will be supervised by consultants with an identified educational supervisor for career development.About usAt present the role is designed around normal working hours, but if required the physician associate will provide clinical care as directed including weekends and out of hours.South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust have come together to form University Hospitals Tees.
