Overview

In this role you will provide expert ophthalmology care with a focus on Neuro-Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility. You will join a cohesive department that covers major subspecialties and contribute to education and research. The position supports NHS service delivery across multiple sites within the Trust, and offers opportunities to influence patient care at scale. You will work within a traditional consultant framework under NHS terms, with potential for part-time arrangements. This is an opportunity to shape subspecialty practice in a large regional eye service.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist clinical care in Neuro-Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility
  • Perform relevant ophthalmic surgeries, including Strabismus procedures
  • Engage in teaching and supervise residents, contributing to undergraduate/postgraduate education
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and research activities
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across The James Cook University Hospital and partner sites
  • Maintain professional registration and meet NHS consultant terms

Key requirements

  • Full GMC Registration
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence confirmed by PMETB/GMC by AAC date)
  • Entry onto GMC Specialist Register or eligible within 6 months of AAC
  • Subspecialist experience in Neuro-Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility
  • Experience in Strabismus surgery
  • Experience supervising resident medical staff
  • Management and administration experience
  • Evidence of teaching skills and potential for research funding
