An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Senior HR Advisor to join the People team at St Bartholomew's Hospital in the heart of London. St Bartholomew's Hospital is the oldest in the country and is home to Barts Heart Centre, the largest specialist cardiac centre in the UK, as well as the St Barts Cancer Centre, a leading treatment centre.

Every single service was rated as Good, with inspectors praising the strong medical and nursing leadership, and the "positive and collaborative" culture.

As a business partnering function, you will work closely with all services on the site including cancer, cardiac, respiratory, fertility and endocrine. You will support the HR Business Partners in delivering a customer-focused service and will be the first point of contact for managers and staff with queries and concerns. You should have a good knowledge of employee relations processes - delivering advice to managers with confidence in line with policy and case law. You will also be given specific projects to stretch your skills and abilities to help develop you further within the advisory role, along with receiving relevant training to support you as you grow.

Main duties of the job:

  • Reporting to the HR Manager and with matrix leadership from the People Partners for Corporate Services, the post holder will ensure the provision of professional, customer-focused HR advice, coaching and solutions to designated Directorate/Services across Bart's Health.
  • To ensure Corporate Trust People policies and procedures are translated and applied locally within operating frameworks.
  • Working in partnership with managers to develop and deliver an effective employee relations service at the Bart which is a crucial element of the overall People Strategy that will deliver an approach to people management that embodies a people-centred culture of learning.
  • This role is responsible for supporting the management and co-ordination of the employee relations casework, ensuring that case work is carried out consistently in an effective and efficient way in accordance with Barts Health policies and procedures, current legislation and best practice.

Qualifications:

  • Essential: Degree level education or equivalent experience, CIPD or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Essential: Generalist HR experience demonstrating competence across a range of HR.
  • Track record of providing HR advice to services and managers in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Experience of advising managers on employee relations matters e.g. disciplinary, grievance, sickness, capability including complex cases with minimal supervision.
  • Experience of working as an HR Advisor in a large complex organisation with union recognition.
  • Experience of supporting change management.
  • Experience of developing through coaching/training on a range of People policies.
  • Desirable: Experience of working with performance metrics/data to guide and direct strategy.
  • Experience of working at HR Advisor level in the NHS.

Knowledge:

  • Essential: Current knowledge of employment legislation, case law and good HR practice.
  • Understanding of key current issues in human resources and the ability to interpret and apply the knowledge to People strategies.
  • Desirable: Understanding of NHS People Strategy.

Skills:

  • Essential: Ability to self-manage and prioritise conflicting demands.
  • Proven effective problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate at all levels, along with interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • To be impartial when providing clear and concise written and verbal communication to staff members at all levels.
  • Have empathy when receiving or providing sensitive, personal, distressing and confidential information.
  • Be tactful, persuasive and able to influence when handling complex situations.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office and input and manipulate data.
  • Leadership - fostering powerful and productive working relationships internally and externally. Be able to motivate and enthuse others.
