Overview

In this role you will support a high-standard autopsy and mortuary service for the hospital and local community. You will help manage the autopsy suite, body handling, and the Medical Examiner system, while supervising junior staff and coordinating with multiple professionals. The position involves on-call rotations and liaising with bereaved families, police, coroners, and funeral directors in a sensitive environment. You will contribute to safe, compliant operations and ongoing governance. This role offers the chance to work at a respected NHS mortuary with opportunities to influence service delivery and public health funerals.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the autopsy suite and body handling as directed by the mortuary manager
  • Assist in monitoring, workload control, supervision, and training of junior staff
  • Deputise for the mortuary manager during annual leave
  • Complete audits and participate in governance meetings
  • Promote Health and Safety through relevant training and courses
  • Liaise with pathologists, hospital staff, HM Coroner, funeral directors, police, and the public
  • Demonstrate clear communication and interpersonal skills; support bereaved families with sensitivity
  • Adhere to SOPs, health and safety guidelines, and Trust policies
  • Participate in the early-morning autopsy rota and out-of-hours on-call system
  • Assist with arrangements for Public Health funerals in Islington

Key requirements

  • Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalent
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
  • Good literacy and clear communication
  • Calm under pressure and able to prioritise under strict deadlines
  • Knowledge of HTA licensing requirements and Health and Safety knowledge
  • Ability to work flexibly and participate in early-morning shifts
  • Be within easy commuting distance for early rota timings
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary mortuary operations (desirable)
