Overview
In this Band 6 Orthoptist role, you join a skilled, multidisciplinary ophthalmology service to develop your clinical skills across orthoptics and related subspecialties. You will manage a varied caseload within clinics including intravitreal injections, neuro-ophthalmology, and stroke/trauma, while contributing to teaching and service development. You’ll work autonomously with support, delivering high-quality, evidence-based care and helping to train colleagues and students. This role offers a collaborative environment and a chance to influence patient care across multiple sites.
Responsibilities
- Manage an autonomous caseload with comprehensive records and evidence-based care
- Deliver specialist orthoptic services in clinics (orthoptic, paediatric, ocular motility, neuro-ophthalmology)
- Provide intra vitreal injections and contribute to stroke and trauma services
- Prioritise onward referrals and coordinate with ophthalmologists for surgical decisions
- Educate and supervise undergraduate orthoptic students and colleagues
- Engage in clinical governance, audits and service development initiatives
- Use outcome measures to evaluate treatment effectiveness and adjust plans
- Ensure safe working practices, risk management and equipment maintenance
- Contribute to teaching and post-graduate training programs
- Support discharge planning and appropriate transfer of care
Key requirements
- Degree in Orthoptics
- HCPC registration
- CPD at a postgraduate level
- Experience running single-handed clinics (essential)
- Knowledge of paediatrics, adults, neuro-ophthalmology (essential)
- Ability to work independently or in a team and handle pressured environments
- Flexible working practices
- Desirable: large teaching hospital experience; involvement in neuro-ophthalmology; pastoral care of students
