Consultant Psychiatrist - CAMHS Emergency Care Service in London

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to work within our Child & Adolescent Emergency Care Service. This part time Consultant post will lead and manage the CECS Service to provide mental health services to children and young people of Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton, Kingston and Richmond as well as providing a range of specialist services to a set of wider, regional and national catchment area. The CAMHS Emergency Care Service (CECS) is located within South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust.

The CAMHS Emergency Care Service provides therapeutic assessment, risk assessment and crisis planning for under-18-year-olds presenting in mental health crisis to A&E Departments and Paediatric Wards at St Georges Hospital (Tooting), Kingston hospital and St Helier Hospital (Carshalton). The Service operates 7 days per week: referrals accepted 9am to 6pm, 9am to 8pm. Assessments take place mainly in A&E/ paediatric wards of local general hospitals whilst follow ups take place in CAMHS borough clinics or online. The team uses evidence-based skills to support meaningful and safe practice, such as Therapeutic Assessment, DBT Skills, Solution Focused Interventions.

Main functions of the team:

• Providing psychosocial and risk assessments, safety planning for young people experiencing a mental health crisis and advising about further support.
• Providing a follow up appointment to review crisis plan and plan ongoing support to ensure a seamless transition of the young person and their family into the community service if required.
• Providing advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals working in other agencies and contribute to multi-agency care planning.

Job responsibilities:

• To provide clinical support for the team and provide psychiatric oversight to the team with current consultant.
• To provide emergency consultation, liaison, advice, management and appropriate support to professionals within the team and in the wider network of the child, young person or family.
• To provide consultation, liaison and joint working with clinicians in other Tier 3 and Tier 2 services, referrals to and liaison with Tier 4 providers and, together with the rest of the service, education and support for Tier 1 referrers.
• To work in partnership with young people, parents and carers to develop and implement effective and agreed care plans.
• To contribute to the development of multidisciplinary and multiagency packages of care, treatment and support for young people and their families with complex mental health, physical health and social care presentations, through effective consultation, liaison and joint-working.
• To provide guidance to the paediatric team regarding the appropriate legal framework for the provision of care for young people presenting with a mental health crisis including guiding consultant paediatricians holding RC responsibility under MHA.
• To work with other members of the team providing education of managing young people presenting in mental health crisis to staff in A&E and Paediatric wards.
• The post-holder will be encouraged to contribute to teaching within the team and across the acute hospitals.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Primary Medical degree and CCT Specialist Registration.
• Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
• Included on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CCT.
• Approved Clinician status (or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment).
• Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act (or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment).

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

• Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved Higher Psychiatric training scheme.
• Excellent knowledge in specialty, especially the assessment and management of mental health emergencies in children and adolescents.
• Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
• Experience of undertaking duties under MHA and MCA.

Audit and Management

• Engage in continuing professional development, and join a Peer Group to gain approval for CPD done.
• Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit, quality improvement, and working with colleagues in the liaison psychiatry team, the acute trust, and managers.
• Commitment to working with allied agencies including carer's groups, and local charities.

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

• Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
• Commitment to shared leadership & collaborative working to deliver improvement.

Teaching

• Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry.
