Consultant Psychiatrist in London

The post holder will provide senior medical input to the Gender Identity Clinic, provide consultant care for patients within the service, hold weekly outpatient clinics and work collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary team. They will also be expected to offer advice to other healthcare professionals in primary and secondary care.

The Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) is the largest and oldest gender clinic in the UK and accepts referrals from all over England for adults with issues related to gender from patients aged 18 and over. It is a large multi-disciplinary team, including psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists, speech and language therapists, General Practitioners, Sexual Health physicians and nurses. We work together to provide holistic gender care, focusing on the biological/medical, psychological and social aspects of gender.

Main duties of the job:

• Provide specialist medical assessment, diagnosis and formulation of patients with gender dysphoria.
• Formulate, deliver and/or coordinate patient-centered management plans.
• Work with the multidisciplinary team to provide safe, effective care to service users.
• Advise on diagnosis and treatment both within the team and to external providers.
• Coordinate and/or provide (or ensure referral to the appropriate service) up to date evidence-based interventions to service users.
• Provide advice on cross-sex hormone therapy and liaise with primary care to ensure its delivery and effective monitoring.
• Provide specialist assessment of readiness and eligibility for surgical intervention and refer appropriately.
• Collaborate with GPs, hospital doctors and primary care physicians regarding the physical health care of patients.
• Liaise with colleagues in other community and specialist teams.
• Contribute to the on-going training and development programme within the team.
• Hold weekly outpatient clinics.
• Communicate and liaise with GPs, psychologists, and other disciplines and agencies as appropriate.
• Communicate with relatives, significant others and partners, in limited circumstances.
• Complete administrative tasks necessary for the fulfilment of the clinical role.
• Adhere to all relevant policies and procedures within the Trust.

Person Specification:

Qualifications and Experience:

• Essential: MBChB, MBBS or equivalent, MRCPsych or FRCPsych, Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists, Full registration with General Medical Council, Completed (or about to complete) specialist higher training, general practice training or further training at level equivalent to CCT in a field relevant to gender dysphoria, Experience of multidisciplinary team working, Inclusion on or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register or General Practitioner Register of the General Medical Council with a license to practice or within 6 months of the CCT date at date of interview, Experience of multi-agency work, Evidence of audit competence, Experience in management roles, both clinical and non-clinical.
• Desirable: Interest in gender and health care and gender diverse care needs, Qualifications in specific psychological/ psychosexual treatment modalities, Registered as a specialist with the Gender Recognition Panel or willing to apply for registration, when eligible, Management training course or other management qualification, Higher training or qualification in Intellectual Disability, neurodivergence, trauma informed care or forensic psychiatry, Experience in a community setting serving a diverse multi-cultural, multi-ethnic population, Experience of working in a Gender Service, Experience in working with people with complex psychosocial and medical needs, Experience in the prescriptions of medicines and/or hormones as medicine.

• Desirable: Interest/knowledge in the field of gender dysphoria, including awareness of diagnostic issues, treatment options, and an evidence-led approach to clinical practice, Competence in management of basic medical care as per the GMC guidelines, Skills in critical analysis.

Skills:

• Essential: High level of general clinical skills, Excellent communication skills (written, oral and interpersonal), Ability to engage effectively and communicate with extremely challenging or emotive circumstances, Ability to provide medical leadership to multidisciplinary team, Ability to work with non-clinical colleagues, including service users and voluntary organisations in service development.
