Shape the future of medicines optimisation for children and young people in Leeds and beyond. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as Consultant Pharmacist for Paediatrics, providing expert clinical and professional leadership for medicines optimisation across Leeds Children's Hospital.
A key priority for this post during the first two to three years will be leading the development and implementation of a new service to support the repatriation of immunosuppression prescribing and medicines supply for children and young people following renal and liver transplantation. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in designing and establishing this service, working collaboratively with specialist transplant teams, pharmacy colleagues and wider multidisciplinary stakeholders to develop safe, effective and sustainable pathways of care.
This represents a significant opportunity to lead service transformation, shape new models of care and establish a high-quality, patient-centred service for children and young people requiring long-term immunosuppression.
Main duties of the job include maintaining a significant clinical role, providing highly specialist pharmaceutical care and expert advice to inpatient wards and multidisciplinary teams, particularly in the management of children and young people with complex renal and liver conditions. You will bring expert pharmacy leadership to complex decisions around immunosuppression and associated medicines, providing specialist advice where individual patients require highly personalised approaches to treatment.
As the repatriation service develops, you will use data, clinical outcomes, medicines safety information and patient experience to evaluate its effectiveness and drive continuous improvement. The learning and infrastructure developed through this work will also provide a foundation for the continued development of specialist paediatric medicines services across Leeds Children's Hospital.
This is an exciting senior clinical leadership opportunity for an experienced and ambitious Paediatric Consultant pharmacist who is passionate about shaping and improving the delivery of pharmaceutical care for children and young people. Working across Leeds Children's Hospital, you will combine expert paediatric clinical practice with strategic leadership, education, research and innovation to drive service development and improve the safe and effective use of medicines.
About us: The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is committed to delivering the highest quality and safest treatment and care to every patient, every time. Our vision is to provide the highest quality specialist and integrated care.
Why you should join our Team: Leeds Children’s Hospital is one of the largest specialist children’s hospitals in the UK and provides care for children and young people from Leeds, across Yorkshire and the Humber, and for a number of highly specialised services, from further afield. Our extensive portfolio provides an exceptional environment in which to practise and develop as a Consultant Pharmacist.
The wider consultant role includes providing strategic and professional leadership for paediatric medicines optimisation across Leeds Children’s Hospital. Working across the four pillars of consultant practice – expert clinical practice, leadership, education and research – you will:
- Provide expert clinical pharmacy practice for children and young people with highly complex medicines needs.
- Act as a recognised source of expert advice for pharmacy, medical, nursing and wider multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Provide strategic leadership for paediatric medicines optimisation and influence the development of services across Leeds Children’s Hospital.
- Lead and support improvement, innovation and transformation in medicines-related pathways.
- Strengthen clinical governance and medicines safety across paediatric services.
- Develop and support advanced and consultant-level pharmacy practice.
- Provide leadership for paediatric pharmacy education and training and contribute to multidisciplinary learning.
- Develop research, audit and quality-improvement activity relating to medicines use in children and young people.
- Build strong regional and national professional networks and represent LTHT externally.
- Contribute to the development of standards, guidance and best practice in paediatric medicines optimisation.
What you will bring to the role: We are looking for an experienced Consultant pharmacist with significant expertise in paediatric practice and evidence of operating at an advanced level across the breadth of consultant practice. You will bring clinical credibility and the confidence to provide expert advice in complex and challenging situations, alongside the ability to influence at senior level and work effectively across professional and organisational boundaries.
You will have a strong track record of developing and implementing new services and will be able to demonstrate how you have taken complex clinical problems from concept through to safe and sustainable delivery. Experience of transplantation, immunosuppression or other highly specialised medicines would be particularly valuable.
Just as importantly, you will be an effective and compassionate leader. You will recognise that the success of a Consultant Pharmacist is not only measured through their own clinical expertise, but through their ability to develop others, build effective teams, establish professional networks and enable sustainable improvements in care.
This is an unusual opportunity to combine expert clinical practice with the design and implementation of a major new model of care. The initial solid-organ transplantation programme gives the successful candidate a tangible and strategically important area in which to demonstrate consultant-level impact, while the breadth of Leeds Children’s Hospital provides significant scope to influence medicines optimisation across paediatrics more widely.
As Paediatric Consultant Pharmacist, you will be a recognised clinical expert and an influential member of the senior paediatric pharmacy and multidisciplinary leadership teams. You will work across professional and organisational boundaries, providing expert advice on complex medicines-related issues and helping to shape the development of paediatric pharmacy services locally, regionally and nationally.
