Overview
In this Principal Psychologist role, you will provide clinical leadership to the prison mental health team and drive high-quality psychological services.
You will work across Garth Prison and partner sites to develop trauma-informed care, oversee the Integrated Mental Health Team, and contribute to service development and regional quality improvements.
Your work will include advanced assessments, complex interventions, and staff training, with a focus on reducing intergenerational trauma and improving outcomes for patients and staff.

Responsibilities
- Provide highly specialist psychological assessments for complex cases
- Lead and evaluate trauma-informed psychological interventions for individuals and groups
- Oversee 1:1 and group therapies, including the Trauma-Informed 'Making Sense' programme
- Deliver teaching, training, and supervision to healthcare and prison staff
- Contribute to audit, service evaluation, and research activities
- Develop specialized treatment plans for high-risk patients and supervise junior staff
- Collaborate with Offender Management, Probation to support transitions
- Maintain accurate records and monitor outcomes through the PTS dashboard
- Participate in CPD, peer supervision, and routine professional meetings
- Represent psychology in governance meetings and contribute to policy development
- Key requirements
- Qualified clinical, counselling or forensic psychologist and HCPC registered
- Postgraduate qualification in at least one psychological therapy modality (eg CBT, systemic/family therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, CAT, DBT, Mentalisation, Schema Therapy)
- Knowledge of psychological models applicable to remand prison settings and current health policies
- Ability to conduct formal psychometric assessments and risk assessments
- Experience in delivering trauma-informed care and complex interventions
- Strong collaboration and communication skills for multidisciplinary work
