We are looking for a Consultant Intensivist to join our critical care team at Hampshire Hospitals. We are a friendly, diverse team, with a range of special interests who work together, both clinically and educationally, to deliver outstanding care to our patients.

We welcome applicants on the Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine alone, as well as those trained in a complementary specialty, which may include Anaesthetics, Acute or Emergency Medicine. Applicants with equivalent training as evidenced by possession of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (Combined Programmes) [CESR(GP)] may also apply, as may candidates currently going through the process of obtaining equivalence. We welcome applications from experienced Consultants in Intensive Care Medicine, who may be looking to relocate to Hampshire, as well as those approaching the end of their training programmes. We would be happy to discuss relocation expenses that may arise following successful appointment.

Our critical care facilities include a 9 bed ICU/HDU at RHCH (Winchester) and 18 Critical Care beds at BNHH (Basingstoke). Both units contribute to ICNARC and are active participants within the Thames Valley and Wessex Adult Critical Care Network. This post is a substantive post for a consultant based on the Winchester site and will maintain the on-call at 1:8. ICU sessions will be based on the Winchester ICU/HDU with a 5-day week on a 1:8 rotation. The posts are offered on a 10 PA contract where Critical Care work would be 5 PA (including on call). The successful candidate's complementary specialty (where applicable) will constitute the remaining PA to make up 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) in a contract totalling 10 PA.

Our vision is to provide outstanding care for every patient. Patient care is at the heart of what we do at our three sites: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 600,000 people across Hampshire and parts of West Berkshire.

We provide specialist services to people across the UK and internationally. We are one of only two centres in the UK treating pseudomyxoma peritonei (a rare form of abdominal cancer) and we are leaders in the field of tertiary liver cancer and colorectal cancer. The trust employs more than 9,000 staff and has a turnover of over 500 million a year.

Your Next Career Move Made Easier: We understand relocating can be a big step. Hampshire Hospitals may be able to provide accommodation options for successful candidates, depending on availability.

There is potential for more work in critical care or the complementary specialty (up to a maximum of 12PA) on negotiation. Supporting professional activities (SPA) allowance starts at 1.5 PA, but we encourage individuals to develop roles and opportunities outside the department, some of which may be recognised in extra SPA time. Like all appointments to the Trust, successful candidates may be required to work at any of the hospital sites if the clinical service requires this. For candidates interested in developing or maintaining an interest in Transfer Medicine, there may be the opportunity to work with the regional Thames Valley & Wessex Transfer Service as part of the role. In addition, opportunities to work within medical education, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels can be explored.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • support the delivery of high-quality clinical care
  • work flexibly dependent on the requirements of the department
  • show a determination to meet or exceed the standards of the Patients Charter
  • assist in our determination to be a successful provider of a range of appropriate services to the local community.

Professional Qualifications:

  • Essential: Full GMC Registration, GMC Specialist Register (or will obtain within 6 months of interview date), MBBS or equivalent, Fellow of Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM) or equivalent, CCT in Intensive Care Medicine (or CESR or CESR(GP)) or will obtain within 6 months of interview date.
  • Desirable: Membership of relevant specialist societies, MD or equivalent, Provider for ATLS, Instructor training or status in a national life support course.

Clinical Experience:

  • Essential: Advanced level training in Intensive Care Medicine (as defined by the FICM), Proven competency in Focused Ultrasound in Intensive Care (FUSIC Heart and Lung).
  • Desirable: Paediatric experience, Approval for trainer/mentor status in FUSIC Heart and Lung.

Skills & Ability:

  • Essential: Aware of the issues affecting current & future NHS practice, understands the concepts and principles of clinical governance.
  • Desirable: Attended an NHS Management Course appropriate to consultant duties.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Applications from job seekers who require current Skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications.
