Overview
In this role you will contribute to a high-quality Molecular Diagnostics service within a regional NHS framework. You will help shape cancer-related diagnostic services and lead laboratory processes in a cross-functional setting. You’ll manage day-to-day operations, support junior staff, and maintain UKAS/ISO15189 standards while collaborating with clinicians across NHS and private facilities. Responsibilities
- Oversee manual and automated molecular assays (e.g., PCR, sequencing, genetic signature analyses)
- Manage day-to-day provision of services and ensure high standards
- Support and develop new and existing services in collaboration with the Specialty Lead
- Supervise and train junior laboratory staff, ensuring competency
- Assess, authorise and release diagnostic patient results
- Contribute to UKAS submissions and maintain QMS ISO15189:2022 compliance
- Keep up-to-date with professional standards and national policies applying to Molecular Diagnostics
Key requirements
- Degree in Biological Science
- State registration with HCPC (BMS or Clinical Scientist)
- Higher degree or equivalent extensive laboratory experience in a relevant role
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development
- Knowledge of molecular techniques in clinical diagnostics
- Experience in NHS laboratory environment
- Experience with quality management systems
- Experience in managing junior staff and developing laboratory processes
- Experience in validating new laboratory processes and writing SOPs
- Experience in training and supervising laboratory staff
- Understanding of budget management
- Current UK professional registration
- Proactive team player
- Strong attention to detail
- Effective communication with clinicians and nursing staff
