Overview

As Associate Director of Operations for Surgery, you will lead the delivery of elective and non-elective surgery services within the new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre framework. You’ll shape regional surgical strategy in collaboration with partner trusts and ensure performance against quality, safety, and RTT targets. The role combines strategic planning, capacity management, and budget oversight to maximise the CASIC facility’s potential. You will work with cross-functional teams to drive improvements and sustain a high-quality patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic issues with medical and nursing colleagues to improve service performance and clinical care
  • Set clear quality and service expectations with Chiefs of Service and Associate Director of Nursing
  • Support COO in negotiations with external commissioners and operational performance
  • Develop and deliver strategy and performance management for the Division of Access and Medicine
  • Create cross-divisional proposals aligned with short-to-mid term objectives
  • Deliver safe, efficient care through non-clinical management teams and empower clinical leadership
  • Develop and deliver complex capacity plans to meet operational targets
  • Introduce innovative business management strategies to maximise efficiency
  • Collaborate with corporate teams on annual plans and budgets to meet targets
  • Potentially express interest in Deputy Chief Operating Officer role after appointment

Key requirements

  • Minimum five years in senior NHS operational management
  • Experience in developing internal and external strategic partnerships and alliances
  • Experience with external commissioners and NHS regulatory bodies
  • Strong stakeholder engagement across diverse groups
  • Strategic business planning and presenting complex business cases at Board level
  • Experience managing large, multi‑strand budgets and responding to financial fluctuations
  • Ability to develop and implement multi‑strand operational strategies and new services across boundaries
  • Proven track record in policy development, service standards, and cross‑organisational collaboration
