Overview
As a Consultant in Upper GI Surgery, you will help expand and lead the Emergency General Surgery service within a large general surgical team. You will integrate with existing pancreatobiliary, oesophagogastric and colorectal subspecialties to share inpatient workload, enhance rapid senior decision-making, and develop ambulatory pathways and hot clinics. The role includes weekend on-call involvement with an elective component to address waiting lists, contributing to service improvement and patient-centered care.

Responsibilities
- Share responsibility for delivering high-quality care to department patients
- Perform ward rounds and treat patients on the shop floor
- Support junior staff in clinical decision-making and supervision
- Participate in on-call and out-of-hours coverage
- Contribute to education, training and Educational Supervisor duties as agreed
- Engage in service development, governance, and quality improvement
- Participate in clinical audits and respond to NICE guidance
- Contribute to research activities where appropriate
Key requirements
- Full GMC registration
- MBBS or equivalent
- FRCS or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via oCCT/CESR or European Community Rights
- Validated logbook showing Upper GI operative experience
- Training and experience in laparoscopic Upper GI surgery
- Ability to provide expert opinions on Upper GI and emergency general surgery
- Independent responsibility for patient care
- Effective communication (written and verbal)
- Team working in multidisciplinary settings
- Initiative and enthusiasm
- Critical appraisal of research and applying outcomes to practice
- Supervising research projects in the department
- Risk management and governance
