Overview

In this role you will provide operational leadership for the Microbiology department across Darent Valley Hospital and support health and safety across site operations. You will drive service transformation, implement operational and clinical innovations, and manage a team of Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and support staff. You will help shape departmental policies, ensure 24/7 service continuity, and align with national guidance and quality standards. This is a cross-site leadership role with a focus on safety, quality, and efficient service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Health and Safety and CL3 facility compliance for NKPS
  • Develop and implement microbiology systems and procedures for effective service delivery
  • Contribute to equipment, reagents, and consumables procurement to ensure best value
  • Undertake routine analytical work using automated and manual methods
  • Engage in research and development projects as required by the department
  • Maintain up-to-date equipment maintenance records and documentation
  • Provide deputy support for Head of Microbiology and participate in major internal/external projects
  • Manage a large team and department e-rostering across sites

Key requirements

  • HCPC Registration
  • A national accredited degree or equivalent
  • MSc in Microbiology, Virology or Biomedical Science and/or Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (desirable)
  • NEBOSH certificate
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Experience as a senior BMS or above in a busy ISO accredited Microbiology/Virology laboratory
  • Experience with implementation of new technology, verification and validation, and Pathology IT systems
  • Leadership and people management

  • Health and Safety knowledge (HSE, ACDP, ISO, DOH)
  • Knowledge of microbiology/laboratory safety legislation
  • Experience with ISO 15189 accreditation
