Overview

In this role you will lead a high-quality clinical pharmacy service for General Medicine within a busy NHS setting. You will act as the senior pharmacist for the specialty, line-manage a small team, and drive service design and quality improvement. You’ll ensure safe medicines optimisation for complex acute patients while maintaining staff wellbeing under pressure. This is a chance to shape medicines governance and contribute to trust-wide priorities in a high-output hospital. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful clinical outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a safe, patient-centred clinical pharmacy service for General Medicine
  • Act as named senior pharmacist for the specialty
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and line management for the clinical pharmacy team
  • Collaborate to implement strategic objectives, workforce plans, service redesign and quality improvement
  • Oversee operational and clinical leadership of the General Medicine pharmacy team
  • Ensure delivery and ongoing development of the General Medicine clinical pharmacy service
  • Drive medicines optimisation for complex acute medical patients
  • Maintain staff wellbeing and resilience under high workload
  • Align service development with Trust priorities, CQC standards, and national guidance
  • Aim for measurable improvements in medicines safety, clinical outcomes and financial stewardship

Key requirements

  • Experience leading or supervising pharmacists in a clinical setting
  • Operational management experience (workload prioritisation, rota planning, service coordination)
  • Proven performance management and staff development experience
  • Ability to lead in high-pressure, high-workload environments
  • Advanced knowledge of acute medical therapeutics
  • Excellent clinical reasoning and decision-making
  • Strong organisational, communication, and stakeholder-influence skills
  • Ability to analyse risk and escalate appropriately
  • Credibility and autonomy in professional practice
  • Experience with clinical information systems and data for service improvement (desirable)
  • Experience supporting research or evaluation (desirable)
  • Experience leading or contributing to service development or quality improvement projects
  • Experience with audit, service evaluation or QI with impact on patient care
  • Experience developing or reviewing guidelines, SOPs or pathways
  • Understanding of medicines governance and patient safety frameworks
  • CPD ongoing and willingness to contribute to education (essential)
  • UK registration with GPhC and relevant degree (essential)
  • Significant post-registration hospital experience in General Medicine or acute specialties (essential)
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal)
