The urology department is looking for a well-motivated and enthusiastic individual to join their team. This post is designed to recruit a full-time consultant (10PA post) to provide a range of services in Urology (Outpatient, Diagnostic and Operative) including participation in a 1 in 11 on call rota covering the University Hospital site (there are no Urology inpatients at Rugby).
The principal objective of the post would be to reinforce the existing provision for the diagnosis and treatment of urinary stone disease - additional interests are welcomed.
University Hospital is a tertiary referral centre and provides a comprehensive urological service. We serve a population of in excess of 1 million people in Coventry & Warwickshire (in partnership with George Eliot and South Warwickshire Hospitals). University Hospital is also designated Trauma Centre. Its satellite hospital, St Cross Rugby is situated 10 miles east of University Hospital and delivers outpatient and day case urology services.
Main duties of the job:
- The post holder will work in conjunction with the existing urologists to provide a sustainable service for the treatment of Urinary stone disease.
- The post would involve taking part in the on-call services for urology on a 1 in 11 basis (Category A).
- The job plan will typically comprise of 7.5 direct clinical care programmed activities (PAs) and 1.5 supporting professional activities (SPAs) as outlined in the sample timetable given below which includes on call commitment (1 programmed activity).
- Opportunities to increase SPA allocation (up to 2.5SPAs) by participating in non-clinical duties such as teaching and research will be discussed at the job plan review six months after the commencement of the appointment.

Person Specification:
- Qualifications: Essential: Meets all Essential; Desirable: Meets all Desirable.
- Training (abilities/skills) and Experience: Essential: General Urology surgical experience; Expertise in treatment of urinary stone disease from prior appointments; Independent care of General Urological emergencies. Desirable: Higher training/specialist interest in Urinary stone disease.
- Teaching/ Educational Experience: Essential: Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainee and other doctors; Ability to design and deliver effective presentations/teaching; Commitment to continuing medical education; Ability to organise and participate in and evidence of teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students. Desirable: Formal teaching qualification; Teaching innovation.
- Clinical Governance: Essential: Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice; Understanding of the Clinical Governance process; Undertaken a complete audit cycle; National and International presentations. Desirable: Published research in peer-reviewed journal; Successful grant application; Completed Research projects.
- Management and Leadership: Essential: Understanding of the concepts of management; Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others; Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service; Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines; Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, waiting times/lists; Competent in basic information technology. Desirable: Management of service development and reconfiguration.
