In this role you will join Lavender Ward at Springfield Hospital as a Consultant Psychiatrist. You will lead a ward team, supervise junior medical staff, and contribute to service development as part of SW London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust. The post participates in modernisation efforts and supports high-quality care across local boroughs. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to balance clinical duties with governance, CPD, and broad management responsibilities. Responsibilities
- Manage, appraise and supervise junior medical staff in line with policy and medical director guidance.
- Ensure junior staff comply with New Deal and Working Time Directive.
- Handle administrative duties and patient record keeping.
- Participate in ward and service planning for the mental health service.
- Remain reachable by phone and email via Trust-provided mobile device.
- Work flexibly within a multidisciplinary team promoting informed risk-taking and anti-discriminatory practice.
- Communicate effectively with staff across disciplines.
- Participate in annual consultant appraisal and CPD activities.
- Maintain GMC registration and MH Act approvals; adhere to professional codes of conduct.
- Engage in job plan reviews to reflect service changes and modernisation.
- Collaborate with managers and colleagues to ensure efficient service operation and contribute to management.
- Comply with Trust policies and financial instructions; assist in financial planning for services.
Key requirements
- Primary Medical degree
- Full GMC registration
- Included on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for Specialist Registrar inclusion within 3 months of CCT
- Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval; Approved Clinician status
- MRCPsych or equivalent (desirable); General Adult Psychiatry specialist register or CCT in General Adult Psychiatry (desirable)
- Experience of higher psychiatric training (minimum 3 years), knowledge of treatment approaches for severe mental illness
- Teaching experience; commitment to CPD and clinical audit
- Experience in service planning and working with third sector partners (desirable)
