Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint two enthusiastic Consultant Paediatricians with a special interest that complements our department to join our team of eleven consultant paediatricians. The post holder will provide local general paediatrics and neonatology care for Barnsley and will also take part in hot week service.
This post will support the Paediatric department in Quality Improvement and standards as per RCPCH guidelines and as part of the Clinical Business Unit (CBU) along with meeting other CBU requirements within Paediatrics.
Our Paediatric ward was refurbished in 2021 and we have a newly modernised Childrens Assessment Unit (CAU) located next to our Emergency Department. The Paediatric ward currently has 8 beds and CAU 9 beds. We have a level 2 Neonatal unit with 14 cots comprising of 2 ITU, 3 HDU and 9 Special care.
This post is a permanent position and comprises of the following: 1:10 hot ward weeks, 1:10 Neonates ward cover, 1:10 weekend on call, 1:10 on call (Monday to Thursday) resident until 22:00 hrs and then non-resident and 2 outpatient clinics a week outside of hot weeks.

Main duties of the job
- Lead and innovate within our services.
- Contribute to service development and re-evaluation.
- Work collaboratively within a supportive, highly skilled multidisciplinary team (providing support and advice to specialist nurses, resident doctors) and regional networks.
- Actively contribute to the paediatric hot week rota, providing senior clinical leadership, and ensuring high-quality patient care during periods of increased service demand.
- Maintain the highest clinical standards in general paediatric and neonatology by ensuring responsibility for their own continuing medical education and professional development.
- Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues in the day-to-day management of the Paediatric Department, actively contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement and audit programmes, while supporting the education, training and professional development of junior doctors, medical students, nurses and allied healthcare professionals.

- Commitment to the development and maintenance of safeguarding skills. Trained to level three in safeguarding.
- Experience of formal and on the job clinical teaching.
- Commitment to under- and post-graduate and multidisciplinary teaching and training.
- Enthusiasm to teach clinical skills.
- Willingness to support non-medical prescribing.
- Able to deliver high quality paediatric care.
- Knowledge and experience of clinical audit.

Qualifications
- Essential: MRCPCH or equivalent.
- Full GMC registration and license to practice.
- CCT in General Paediatrics or within 6 months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.
Desirable
- Higher degree such as MD or MSc.
- Evidence of organisational and change management skills.
- SPIN in Neonatology or other complementary specialty.
