Overview

In this role you will lead and develop a regional glaucoma service within UHB, working across multiple sites to meet clinical demand. You will contribute to teaching and research, and support flexible timetables including possible evenings or weekends as the service expands. You will collaborate with a broad ophthalmology team to manage a wide spectrum of glaucoma cases and drive service improvement. The position offers the chance to shape regional care delivery and participate in evolving community ophthalmology provision.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and develop a regional glaucoma service across multiple hospital sites
  • Manage a wide spectrum of glaucoma cases, including acute and complex cases
  • Perform routine cataract surgery in glaucoma patients and glaucoma-specific procedures (SLT, YAG, MIGS, trabeculectomy, Preserflo, tube surgery)
  • Contribute to teaching, research, and the department's portfolio
  • Support flexible/annualised timetables and cross-site sessions, including possible evening/weekend clinics
  • Assist in ward referral reviews and participate in clinical governance across sites

Key requirements

  • GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry or within six months of CCT at interview
  • Minimum 4 years post-graduate training in general ophthalmology
  • Further training/experience in managing glaucoma
  • Good understanding of modern glaucoma management; able to manage routine glaucoma cases
  • Clinical experience of acute and complex glaucoma
  • Ability to undertake routine cataract surgery and glaucoma laser treatment (SLT, YAG, Diode)
  • Experience of glaucoma surgery; MIGS, trabeculectomy, Preserflo and tube surgery under general or local anaesthesia
