Main duties of the job:

  • University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Locum Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist to contribute to the provision of paediatric cardiac services within this dynamic and progressive department.
  • The Paediatric Cardiology Unit at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is a Level 1 congenital cardiothoracic centre and forms part of the Oxford-Southampton Congenital Cardiac Network.
  • Cardiac services covering the full spectrum of care are provided for patients of all ages.
  • The Trust is one of the major centres for fetal medicine, neonatal and infant cardiac care, and adult congenital heart disease, serving the population of southern and central England.
  • As one of the few fully co-located congenital cardiac services in the UK, there is close collaboration across departments, including adult congenital cardiology, intensive care, and regional specialist paediatric services.

Job responsibilities:

  • Duties include ward cover for the paediatric cardiology ward, outpatient clinics, and participation in the on-call rota, including out-of-hours cover.
  • You will contribute to the care of patients with congenital heart disease in the paediatric and neonatal intensive care units, as well as on the general paediatric wards.
  • In addition to clinical assessment, you will be expected to perform echocardiographic assessments as required.
  • Appropriate training and support will be provided to develop and maintain these skills.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary team meetings and other educational activities within the department is expected, and involvement in research is encouraged.

Person Specification:

  • Qualifications, Training & Experience
  • Essential: MBBS or equivalent medical qualification, GMC registration with a licence to practise, appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
  • Desirable: CCT (or within 6 months of CCT date) in Paediatric Cardiology.
  • Aptitudes and skills
  • Essential: Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams, understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff, evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English), evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
