Emergency Medicine in East Kent Hospitals is at an exciting period of redevelopment, having attracted national investment to rebuild the Emergency Department at our William Harvey Hospital. Our Emergency Departments provide innovative and fast-paced integrated emergency care to a wide range of patients from East Kent. It is our inspiration to develop into an academic and research unit in emergency medicine for Kent. Each of our Emergency Departments offers a full 24-hour emergency service. The Emergency Departments are supported by co-located Urgent Treatment Centres, a 24-hour UTC at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital with a further 7 community UTCs in the region. In total approximately 220,000 patients are seen annually across the Emergency Departments.
Main duties of the job
- To provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients attending the Emergency Department.
- To be proactive in ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring that the Emergency Access Standards are adhered to, ensuring that we deliver safe, high quality care.
- Patient safety, dignity and care are the highest priority and at the centre of all that we do. Whilst on duty in the department the ED consultant will provide highly visible and focused clinical leadership - working in conjunction with the nurse in charge of the shift and the SpR/specialty doctor lead to ensure that there is effective and timely communication between the clinical team maintaining optimal patient flow.
- To provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise and train the junior and specialty doctors in emergency medicine and emergency nurse practitioners.
- To be proactive in the care group's clinical governance agenda and take on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement, thereby abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust.
- To liaise with clinicians and managers within and outside the department to address issues arising that affect the services.

Person Specification
Qualifications and training
- Essential: Full GMC Registration, FRCEM or equivalent, Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical School, CCT/CESR Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date.
- Desirable: Leadership or Teaching qualification, Distinctions, scholarships, prizes, publications, Other degrees, e.g. BSc, MSc, MD, Dual accreditation in ITU/PHEM/PEM, Instructor status in advanced life support course.
Skills and experience
- Essential: Wide and extensive experience in all aspects of Emergency Medicine.
- Desirable: Special interest within or outside of Emergency Medicine.
Clinical governance
- Essential: Audit, Complaints management, Root Cause Analysis, Morbidity and Mortality meetings, Structured Judgement Reviews, Serious Incident Investigation.
