Consultant in Cardiology - Heart Failure OR Imaging

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Cardiology team at Rotherham Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant Cardiologist with either a specialist interest in Heart Failure or Cardiac Imaging (advanced echo and cardiac CT). This is a flexible recruitment opportunity where we are seeking to appoint one consultant post, with the specialist area determined by the successful candidate's expertise and interests. The post has been developed as part of ongoing work to strengthen and modernise Cardiology services, improve patient pathways and support sustainable service delivery across the wider system.

The successful candidate will join a supportive and forward-thinking department with opportunities to contribute to service development, pathway redesign, education, governance and quality improvement work. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is committed to delivering high quality patient care and helping shape the future direction of Cardiology services within the Trust.

The department would particularly welcome applicants with an interest in developing Heart Failure services, including pathway redesign, outpatient transformation and integrated working across acute and community settings, alongside applicants with an interest in Cardiac Imaging services including Echocardiography, Stress Echo, CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA) and Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE).

Main duties of the job:

• Participation in General Cardiology outpatient clinics and inpatient activity
• Supporting delivery and development of either Heart Failure or Cardiac Imaging pathways
• Participation in the consultant on-call rota
• Working collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team and South Yorkshire Cardiology network
• Supporting service improvement, governance and quality initiatives
• Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and wider MDT colleagues
• Contributing to pathway redesign and transformation work aimed at improving patient experience, access and flow through Cardiology services

The post holder will be encouraged to develop areas of specialist interest in line with service need and wider departmental objectives.

Job responsibilities:

This post is for a full-time Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in either Heart Failure or Imaging (Advanced echo, Cardiac CT). The successful candidate will join a well-established Cardiology unit with the opportunity to develop and deliver state of the art services in a tailor-made Cardiology suite including purpose-built catheterisation laboratory.

The precise job plan of this post will be tailored to the skills of the applicant alongside the needs of the Department. You will be joining a team of five other Consultant Cardiologists, including two with sub-specialty interest in cardiac device therapy, one imaging specialist (Cardiac MRI and Nuclear), one interventional cardiologist and one general cardiologist.

For interested candidates there is the opportunity to develop research interest and time for this can be factored into your job plan. We have a successful portfolio of research studies within the cardiology unit supported by a research nurse from the Trust R&D Department.

Person Specification:

• Qualifications: Full registration and a licence to practise with the GMC; Eligible to be included on the Specialist register - CCT expected within 6 months of interview date or Evidence of CESR application submission and within 6 months of obtaining Specialist Registration via CESR; MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification; MRCP specialist qualification or equivalent.
• Experience: Extensive training and experience in subspeciality interest; For Heart Failure post: experience of advanced heart failure management, and independence to undertake and report diagnostic cardiac catheterisation studies; For Imaging post: BSE or equivalent accreditation in Transoesophageal echocardiography and stress echocardiography, and level 3 accreditation in Cardiac CT.
• Education and Teaching: Proven ability to teach and train others.
• Research and Audit: Evidence of audit and the implementation of change following the audit; Relevant research published in peer review journal (desirable).
• Clinical Skills: Any other specific skills required to undertake the role above those required to achieve CCT.
• Management Skills: Demonstrate effective team working skills; Time management and organisational ability; Proven knowledge of systems and process of NHS or equivalent; Commitment to and understanding of their responsibility to the organisation.
