Overview
In this role you join a long-standing cardiothoracic team to lead heart and lung transplantation and related services at Freeman Hospital.
You will work within NOAH/ARC, supporting organ assessment, retrieval, and post-operative care as part of a multidisciplinary program.
You’ll manage donor offers, perform transplants, and contribute to MCS and EVLP activities, shaping a high-volume, specialized transplant service.
This position offers mentorship opportunities and a clear impact on patient outcomes through advanced perfusion and recovery techniques.
Responsibilities
- Perform heart and lung transplantation and donor retrievals independently
- Manage donor offers and coordinate transplant logistics
- Deliver post-operative care, ward rounds, and MDT meetings
- Develop and support MCS programs (ECMO, Impella, VAD)
- Involve in ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) and organ recovery
- Provide transplant clinics and cover duties within transplant program
- Contribute to conventional cardiac surgery as appropriate
- Engage in service development and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team
- Key requirements
- Primary Medical Qualification
- Full GMC Registration
- FRCS (C-Th) or equivalent
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register within 6 months from AAC date
- Recognised training in heart and lung transplantation (National or International Fellowship or similar)
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Independent clinical decision-making
- Teaching and supervision of junior staff
- Heart and lung transplantation
- Donor retrievals (NHSBT sign-off for adult DBD/DCD)
- Ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP)
