Consultant Cardiologist with an interest in Interventional Cardiology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Cardiologist with an interest in Interventional Cardiology to work within the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. This permanent appointment will complement the current team which consists of 23 Consultant Cardiologists who are dedicated to the delivery of tertiary cardiac services of the highest standard to a population of 1.3 million people. The Cardiology Department offers a full range of interventional cardiology procedures and this post is required to support, in particular, the acute coronary syndrome work stream and the primary PCI rota.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £114,099 per annum to £166,585 per annum.

Main duties of the job include:

• Working alongside 6 interventional cardiology colleagues, responsible for delivering approximately 1600 coronary interventions and 2500 diagnostic cardiac catheterisations annually.
• The full range of standard and advanced coronary interventional procedures are performed.
• The 3 catheter labs are equipped with pressure wire, orbital and rotational atherectomy, intravascular lithoplasty, OCT and intravascular ultrasound.
• Participation in a 1 in 9 on-call rota for acute interventional cardiology at UHW in addition to a 1 in 17 rota for acute general cardiology.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services. Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University's School of Medicine will be expected. Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

Qualifications required include:

• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• On specialist register for specialty/specialty registrar with CCT/CESR (Combined programme) due within 6 months of interview date.
• MRCP (UK) or an equivalent qualification.
• Desirable: Higher Degree (MD, PhD or equivalent).

Essential experience includes broad training and experience in the practice of clinical cardiology including interventional cardiology.

Essential skills include:

• Recognised ability as a clinical cardiologist and interventional cardiologist.
• Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working.
• Self-motivated and flexible approach to work.

Clinical governance requirements include:

• Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice.
• Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent).
• Understanding clinical risk management and clinical governance.

Research requirements include:

• Evidence of active research interests.
• Ability to critically appraise research.
• Desirable: Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication.

Teaching requirements include:

• Evidence of teaching medical students and junior doctors.
• Desirable: Organisation of (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) teaching programmes.

Management requirements include:

• Evidence of effective leadership skills.
• Commitment to participating in and understanding of the management process.
• Desirable: Evidence of management training.
