Overview
In this role you will join a specialized epilepsy and functional neurosurgery team to deliver advanced therapies for epilepsy, including gene and cell therapies, using state-of-the-art intraoperative MRI stereotactic techniques. You will contribute to a growing epilepsy surgery programme at the University Hospital of Wales and work within a multidisciplinary network supporting clinical trials and translational research. The position offers opportunities to shape the Epilepsy Surgery service and advance neurotherapies in a teaching hospital environment. You will collaborate across clinical and research teams to improve patient outcomes and drive innovation.
Responsibilities
- Deliver epilepsy surgery and functional neurosurgery procedures as part of the Epilepsy Surgery programme
- Lead and participate in gene therapy delivery to the human brain using intraoperative MR stereotaxy
- Collaborate with neurosurgery, epileptology, neuroradiology, neuropsychology, neurophysiology, neuropsychiatry and nursing teams
- Contribute to clinical trials and translational research within the Advanced Neurotherapies Centre
- Support and participate in SEEG implantation and intraoperative MRI-guided procedures
- Engage in teaching, audit, governance, and multidisciplinary training activities
- Participate in development of the epilepsy service at a regional level and within the university health board
- Contribute to research facilities and tissue biobanking initiatives associated with neuroscience research
Key requirements
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- On GMC Specialist Register for Neurosurgery / CCT / CESR
- Up-to-date GCP certification
- Competence in general and emergency neurosurgical procedures
- Experience and competency in epilepsy surgery
- Experience with image-guided neurosurgical systems
- Completed fellowships in epilepsy surgery and functional/DBS neurosurgery with laser-interstitial therapy and intraoperative MRI experience
- Experience with SEEG implantation and medial temporal epilepsy surgery
- Desirable: Neurosurgical Clinical Trials experience and Advanced MR Imaging expertise
- Evidence of team and multidisciplinary working
- Participation in clinical audit, risk management and appraisal/revalidation
- Ability to critically appraise research and teaching experience with student/trainee education
