Overview
In this role you will provide strategic leadership and technical input to the CDSC, focusing on infectious disease epidemiology, surveillance, field investigations, and research. You will lead surveillance and outbreak responses, contribute to policy guidance, and collaborate with Health Protection teams and partners. There are opportunities to develop a research portfolio and to teach and train registrars. You act as the epidemiology lead for the HARP specialty, shaping national health protection activities across Wales.

Responsibilities
- Strategic leadership of infectious disease surveillance and health effects from environmental hazards
- Field epidemiology service for outbreaks and incidents in community or healthcare settings
- Provide data, evidence and policy guidance for programmes and priority areas
- Two-way support for Health Protection Teams, including surveillance and case management
- Provide consultant cover for the All-Wales Acute Response rota
- Offer scientific advice to public health/NHS staff and Welsh Government on health protection
- Promote professional standards, including training, research and audit, and supervise trainees
- Lead/participate in teaching, training and supervision within the epidemiology network
- Opportunity for leadership roles in infection control and national health protection service
Key requirements
- Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register or UK Public Health Specialist Register
- Must be licensed to practise and meet CPD requirements
- If not yet on the register, must show evidence of application within 6 months of interview
- Experience in health protection and field epidemiology
- Two+ years of health protection experience including on-call/out-of-hours
- Strong knowledge of epidemiology and environmental health hazards
- Strategic thinking
- Strong written and oral communication
- Interpersonal and influencing skills
- Expertise in epidemiological and statistical methods
- Numerate with strong analytical skills
- Computer literate with MS Office and statistical software
