The Practice Governance, Compliance and Workforce Manager will support the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality patient services through the management of governance, regulatory compliance, workforce administration, quality improvement, and organisational development activities. The post holder will be responsible for coordinating the practice's Care Quality Commission (CQC) compliance framework, policy and procedure management, inspection readiness, staff training compliance, workforce support, and quality assurance processes. They will provide administrative and operational support to the Director of Business and Deputy Director of Business and play a key role in supporting strategic priorities, innovation, and service improvement initiatives.

Main duties of the job

  • Develop, implement, review and maintain practice policies, procedures and standard operating procedures in line with NHS guidance, employment legislation, CQC requirements & best practice.
  • Ensure the practice maintains ongoing compliance with CQC Standards and contractual obligations & ensures inspection readiness.
  • Support quality assurance programmes, audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain governance systems including policy registers, audit schedules, action plans and compliance dashboards.
  • Monitor compliance against internal and external standards and escalate risks where required.
  • Support the management of complaints, significant events, patient feedback and learning outcomes.
  • Coordinate and monitor risk assessments, business continuity plans and governance actions.
  • Provide HR and workforce administration support to the management team.
  • Support recruitment processes including advertising vacancies, arranging interviews, preparing recruitment documentation and pre-employment checks.
  • Coordinate induction programmes for all new starters.
  • Support the management of staff records ensuring compliance with employment legislation and NHS requirements.
  • Maintain workforce databases including training, appraisal, immunisation, registration and DBS records.
  • Monitor annual appraisals and mandatory training completion.
  • Produce workforce compliance reports for senior management.
  • Support sickness absence monitoring, return-to-work processes and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Assist managers in implementing HR policies and practices.
  • Coordinate and deliver practice induction programmes for new employees.
  • Organise and support educational placements for medical students, GP registrars, nursing students and other healthcare professionals.
  • Develop and maintain induction resources and training materials.
  • Monitor completion of mandatory and role-specific training requirements.
  • Support the delivery of internal training sessions and workforce development programmes.
  • Maintain training records and provide regular compliance reports.
  • Promote a culture of learning, continuous professional development and staff engagement.
  • Provide comprehensive administrative support to the Director of Business and Deputy Director of Business.
  • Support delivery of strategic and operational priorities.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, business cases and meeting papers.
  • Coordinate governance meetings, workforce meetings and quality review meetings, maintaining accurate records, minutes and action logs.
  • Support contract monitoring, performance reporting and service development activities.
  • Contribute to business continuity planning and organisational resilience arrangements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, patient services and staff experience.
  • Lead or support projects designed to improve operational efficiency and quality of care.
  • Support achievement of practice objectives and priorities within the business plan.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Essential: Experience supporting CQC compliance and inspection preparation.
  • Experience developing and reviewing policies and procedures.
  • Experience providing workforce or HR administration support.
  • Experience organising training, inductions or educational placements.
  • Experience supporting senior managers and organisational projects.
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret guidance and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload and meet deadlines.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Desirable: Experience of working in primary care.
