Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthetics in Brighton

Applications are invited for a substantive post within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. Candidates must have full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and be on the Specialist Register of the GMC under Intensive Care Medicine.

The Critical Care Unit (CrCU) has recently completed a multi-million-pound upgrade and expansion to 34 state-of-art beds on the Royal Preston Site. The unit is a tertiary centre for several specialties including neurosciences, major trauma, vascular, head and neck and renal.

Anaesthetic Directorate is ACSA accredited by the Royal College of Anaesthesia and led by a team supporting the perioperative model recommended by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. This comprises a Clinical Director, and 3 Associate Clinical Directors for Workforce, Preoperative Care, Emergency and Elective Services.

Main duties of the job

• Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services for the Department.
• Participate in the critical care consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleagues' absence.
• Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
• Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
• Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.
• Provide an anaesthetic service as a member of the Department of Anaesthesia across both Preston and Chorley sites depending on Directorate service requirements.
• Undertake pre-operative assessment of patients as appropriate, together with post-operative management and follow-up of patients in appropriate cases.
• Undertake weekly theatre sessions as allocated, which may include evening sessions or, rarely, a weekend session (by mutual agreement).

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides a wide range of general hospital services to around 370,000 people from the Chorley, South Ribble and Preston areas. We are one of the largest Critical Care Units in the Northwest of England, admitting over 1600 patients every year. In addition, we provide specialist services to approximately 1.5 million people from Lancashire and South Cumbria, and we are a designated Major Trauma Centre.

The Trust provides coaching services from experienced members of the human resources team, and new consultants are allocated a mentor to ensure a seamless transition into the consultant workforce. The Critical Care unit is the base for 'The Perioperative Firm' of Medical Students. Up to 36 students a year are based in the unit for 4 weeks at a time, spending some time in theatres learning skills, as part of their Heart, Lungs and Blood module of year 3.

Person Specification

• Qualifications
• Essential: MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent Primary Medical Qualification.
• Registration with the GMC, with a full licence to practise OR eligible for registration within six months of interview.
• Eligible to be included on the GMC with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) in ICM & Anaesthetics.
• Desirable: Higher qualifications; MA, MSc or MD/PhD. Hold the FFICM or EDIC. Extended complementary skills e.g. Echo, USS accreditation.
• Experience and Skill
• Essential: Full training in Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthetics.
• Management: Evidence of Clinical Leadership. Evidence of commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/continuous improvement development in service.
• Desirable: Demonstrate with examples clear leadership and successful quality improvement in Critical Care/Anaesthetics. Evidence of involvement or ideally leadership in QI work.
• Personal
• Essential: Proven effective communication skills with examples. Good organisation skills with examples. Works well within a multidisciplinary environment. Resident within 30 minutes travel time to Chorley/Preston.
• Desirable: Evidence of flexibility and adaptability. Evidence of cross-functional working. Membership of relevant societies.
• Research and Development
• Essential: Involvement in Audits. Broad research experience demonstrating leadership qualities and collaborative working.
• Desirable: Established record of research funding. Presentations & Peer-reviewed publications.
• Health
• Essential: Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/ Good Medical Practice.
• Teaching and Training
• Essential: Experience in teaching, training and supervising medical students, doctors and the wider MDT.
• Desirable: Trained Clinical or Educational Supervisor. Formal teaching qualification or instructor status for a relevant course on acute care or the deteriorating patient e.g. ALS/ATLS.
