Specialty Doctor in ENT in Bradford

Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor post in ENT. This is a permanent post. Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute services for the City of Bradford and surrounding areas, and has two large Hospitals; Bradford Royal Infirmary and St. Luke's Hospital. All main specialties are represented in Bradford, and the Trust has a bed base of approximately 1061 beds. Main duties of the job

• Rhinology, Facial Plastics: The ORL-HNS unit perform the majority of rhinoplasty surgery for Bradford. In addition, there will be opportunity for the post holder to observe facial plastic procedures subject to arrangement with consultants from the Plastic Surgery department at BTHT. There will be ample opportunity to gain experience in rhinology and there are over 200 endoscopic sinus surgery procedures performed annually including frontal sinus surgery.
• Otology: The ORL-HNS unit at BTHT offer a supra-regional cochlear implant service with over 100 implants performed per year. A wide range of otological conditions are seen and over 100 mastoid procedures are performed annually.

Job responsibilities

• Clinical Assessment, investigation and treatment of patients referred to the service.
• Provision of a range of clinical interventions as appropriate to the commissioned service (e.g. microsuction, flexible nasendoscopy, audiology etc.).
• Links with other services to ensure that the full holistic needs of the patient are met (e.g. audiologist & hearing aid services, vestibular physiotherapy, speech and language services etc.).
• The knowledge to signpost patients to other support services, including local and national patient support groups.
• Education and liaison: Provision of advice and support to local practitioners through non-face-to-face contact (e.g. telephone, internet) in the management of ENT conditions.
• Service development/leadership: Work with local secondary care specialists and other groups managing ENT conditions to develop an integrated ENT service model that facilitates streamlined care pathways linked to the healthcare needs of the local community.
• In collaboration with other members of the local health community, develop and implement management guidance in the care of common ENT conditions.
• Become involved in integrated training programmes across primary and secondary care for medical, nursing staff and extended primary care team members.
• Work with patients, the public and service providers to support an integrated, patient centred approach to commissioning services.

Person Specification

Experience

• Previous experience relevant to the specialty.
• Clinical governance / audit experience.
• Out of hours experience relevant to job.
• Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
• Minimum of four years (FTE or equivalent) postgraduate training in the UK (or equivalent EEA training) of which at least 2 years training must be in the relevant specialty or a recognised equivalent training.
• Applicant knowledge is up to date and is fit to practise safely.
• Commitment for managing professional development.

Skills

• Practical skills in relation to the speciality.
• Proven ability to work in different clinical settings.
• Clear communication skills.
• Organisation and planning.
• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
• Evidence of achievement of ST1 / CT1 competencies in the specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2 / CT2 competences in specialty by the start date of the post.
• Desirable: Postgraduate qualification equivalent to MRCS ENT.

Knowledge

• Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality.
• Understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff.
• Understanding of what the NHS Constitution means to you, and your responsibilities to the public, patients and colleagues.
• Acute care safe - up to date ALS ENT specialty clinical knowledge.
