Consultant in Bolton

Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to welcome applications for 2 Consultants in Respiratory Medicine. This is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding Respiratory team. We are looking for highly motivated colleagues with excellent communication and team working skills. You will hold MRCP (or equivalent) and you must be fully registered with the GMC or within six months of obtaining your CCT. These posts seek to combine your commitment to Respiratory Care, recognising that you may also wish to retain an interest in a specialist field.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are currently working as Locum NHS consultants and applying to be on the GMC specialist register via CESR. If successful, they will be initially offered a locum consultant post on a 1 year fixed term contract whilst they obtain their Specialist registration. The department consists of two acute Respiratory Wards, a specialist nursing team providing integrated care across acute and community settings, and a specialist respiratory physiology department provided in the community.

The trust is looking to expand the consultant team and allow further innovation and specialisation. The posts will primarily be based at the Royal Bolton Hospital and support the delivery of a seven-day Respiratory Consultant service on a 1 in 8 Respiratory rota, with minimal GIM commitment.

Main duties of the job

• The successful candidate will share inpatient responsibilities with the other consultants with daily ward rounds on dedicated ward weeks.
• In-patient work includes a rotating in-reach service to the emergency department and admissions wards with a daily 4 patient rapid access clinic.
• The doctor will also support out patient and hospital at home services.
• We have an acute NIV service, interventional pulmonology service including Bronchoscopy, EBUS, Medical Thoracoscopy, a dedicated pleural clinic, a TB clinic and a modern lung function laboratory.
• A job plan for the post will be agreed with the successful candidates after appointment.
• There are opportunities to develop new services and expand existing services including training in EBUS depending on the successful candidates' interests.
• We are willing to consider flexible working requests such as part time or annualised hours but you will be expected to work shifts on a rota that supports service needs.

Job responsibilities

• The appointee will be contracted for a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge and for the proper functioning of your clinical department.
• You will be required to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of your patients and the running of your clinical department.
• The appointee will collaborate with incumbent colleagues in developing innovative working practices for the delivery of patient centred services.
• The appointee will participate in the respiratory on call rota with consultant colleagues.
• The appointee will be expected to provide emergency cover, if needed on a reciprocal basis for Consultant leave.
• The appointee will have responsibilities toward carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required, and for contributing to post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.
• The appointee will be expected to take an active involvement in the training and support of Junior Hospital doctors and act as a clinical and educational supervisor.
• The department is fully committed to training for the membership of the Royal College of Physicians.
• General Practice trainees may attend the clinics as and when required.
• The Bolton Hospitals NHS Trust has been approved by the University of Manchester for the teaching of medical students in all 3 clinical years.
• There is an excellent Postgraduate Centre, Library and Education at the Royal Bolton Hospital for various types of educational activities.
• Bolton Hospital has been working closely with the University of Bolton and have established an excellent Physician Associate training programme and there are exciting plans in the pipeline for development of further links with University of Bolton and the building of a new Educational Centre.
• The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Professional Development as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
• The appointee will be encouraged to develop and continue your own research interests and to join in the research activities of the department/Trusts.
• The appointee will be expected to participate, lead and supervise clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
• The appointee will be contracted on a whole-time basis. Any consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time, will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues.
• If the appointee wishes to undertake private medical practice, they may be asked to provide one additional programmed activity of direct clinical care. This would be paid at the appropriate rate.
