Overview

In this role you will lead day-to-day operations for Neurosurgery, balancing emergency and elective capacity to protect timely care. You will work with clinical leads to drive performance against NHS standards and improve booking, theatres, and bed usage. You’ll develop planning and business cases to grow the service and line-manage admin and scheduling teams. The role offers exposure to senior leadership and strategic service development in a leading teaching hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day operational management of Neurosurgery with multidisciplinary teams
  • Deliver performance across RTT, Cancer Standards, diagnostics, waiting lists, theatres and productivity
  • Own the 18-week RTT standard, manage PTL, and reduce long waits
  • Oversee neuro-oncology pathways and tertiary referrals and transfers
  • Manage emergency and elective capacity daily, protect electives involving bed, theatre, and critical care coordination
  • Lead forward service planning, write and project-manage business cases, identify new opportunities
  • Line-manage admin, booking and scheduling teams; support workforce planning, governance, risk, data quality and financial management

Key requirements

  • Proven operational management experience at Band 6/7 or above in an acute NHS setting, ideally in a surgical specialty
  • Track record of improving performance against NHS standards, especially 18-week RTT
  • Experience of theatre scheduling, utilisation improvements and reducing cancellations
  • Experience balancing emergency and elective activity and managing capacity and demand
  • Experience writing business cases and delivering projects
  • Line management experience for administrative teams; knowledge of RTT rules and PTL validation
  • Experience handling confidential information and patient interactions
  • Knowledge of NHS structures and elective care priorities
