Overview
As a Bank Doctor, you join the Hospice Medical Team to deliver medical support for inpatients and provide palliative care guidance to professionals, patients, and families. You’ll participate in a non-resident weekend rota with optional weekday cover and Bank Holiday shifts, contributing to an on-call framework supported by a Consultant. You work across inpatient, day centre, and community settings, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to maintain high-quality symptom control and compassionate care. This role offers meaningful scope to impact end-of-life care within a supportive charitable environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide clinical care and medical input to Barnsley Hospice patients under Consultant supervision
- Review and manage medical care for Hospice inpatients
- Consult with patients in various Hospice settings (inpatient, day centre, outpatient)
- Maintain accurate records in the electronic patient record
- Participate in first on-call rota and non-resident weekend rota
- Provide on-call face-to-face reviews when required
- Deliver palliative care telephone advice to professionals in the community and hospital
- Offer Pallcall telephone advice to patients and families
- Seek Consultant on-call advice as appropriate
- Coordinate information transfer between specialist palliative care teams
- Liaise with hospital and community practitioners to optimise patient outcomes
- Engage in mandatory training and continuing professional development
- Work flexibly with colleagues to ensure high-quality patient service
Key requirements
- Experience in independent palliative care for patients with advanced disease and end-of-life care
- Experience with a specialist palliative care team or hospice inpatient unit
- GMC registration with licence to practise (essential)
- MRCP, MRCGP or equivalent (essential)
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Computer literate
- Teaching experience or interest (essential)
- Postgraduate qualification in Palliative Medicine (desirable)
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and manage time effectively
- Ability to handle pressure with resilience and maintain confidentiality
