Overview
In this role you will lead ophthalmology services with a focus on paediatric care, teaching, and audit while managing complex cataract and emergency cases.
You will contribute to regional and national research and participate in training across the department.
You will work within an integrated NHS Wales health board committed to compassionate care and multidisciplinary collaboration.
This is a senior post with a mandate to drive excellence in paediatric ophthalmology and general ophthalmic services.
You will engage in patient-centred care, governance, and service development across sites.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage the work of Specialty Doctors and specialist nursing staff
- Participate in education and training of medical students, nurses, paramedics, GPs, and other personnel
- Participate in regional and national research and governance
- Involvement in all aspects of the department's work including teaching, audit, elective and trauma care
- Engage in cataract services and complex surgeries; contribute to emergency procedures, laser treatments, trauma care, ROP screening, strabismus, amblyopia, and congenital management
- Promote clinical governance, professional supervision, and appraisal of junior medical staff
- Support departmental management and cross-site collaboration
- Attend departmental management meetings and participate in service development
- Support research governance and ethical compliance in studies
- Key requirements
- GMC specialist registration in Ophthalmology or CCT within 6 months of interview
- Paediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship
- FRCOphth or equivalent
- Broad experience in ophthalmology including complex cataracts and emergency surgeries
- Experience supervising and managing Specialty Doctors and nursing staff
- Commitment to education and training of healthcare professionals
- Evidence of involvement in audit and continued professional development
- Willingness to travel between sites and work flexibly
- Willingness to engage in research within governance policies
- Knowledge of NHS management practices and clinical governance
