Overview
In this role you will lead and shape high-quality stroke care across HASU and Stroke Recovery Units, driving rapid assessment, imaging-guided decision making, and inpatient rehabilitation. You will work within a high-performing, innovative stroke service and have opportunities to expand clinical responsibilities tailored to your interests. The role combines leadership, teaching, and clinical excellence to improve outcomes for stroke and TIA patients across NSECH and partner sites.

Responsibilities
- Provide resident consultant cover for HASU shifts (08:00β20:00) with night-time on-call from home; lead assessment and management of suspected stroke/TIA
- Oversee care of all inpatients in the HASU; collaborate with Stroke Nurse Practitioners and ED staff
- Lead HASU workflows and coordinate with a 24/7 Stroke Nurse Practitioner team
- Deliver consultant leadership on Stroke Recovery Units; oversee inpatient stroke care and rehabilitation with MDT
- Manage neurovascular outpatient activity including rapid-access assessment and longer-term follow-up
- Participate in flexible, planning-based job scheduling; engage in teaching, research, and educational supervision as needed
- Weekend HASU duties shared across the team; on-call remuneration applies
- Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives
- Support imaging-driven decision making using CT, CTA, CTP, MRI and carotid Doppler ultrasound
Key requirements
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- Fully registered on the UK GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
- Extensive experience in hyperacute/acute and rehab stroke medicine
- Full accreditation in a parent specialty (geriatrics, acute medicine, neurology, or clinical pharmacology) with the appropriate Royal College
- Current GMC Registration
- Desirable: Dual accreditation in parent specialty and stroke medicine; higher degree
- Leadership and multi-disciplinary team management
- Teaching and educational supervision
- Commitment to medical audit and lifelong learning
- Hyperacute stroke management; rapid-access neurovascular assessment
- Neurovascular imaging interpretation (CT, CTA, CTP, MRI)
- Carotid Doppler ultrasound; radiology-pathology collaboration
