About the role

National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

In April 2025, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) has taken on the exciting new role of being the Regional Energy Strategic Planner. We will be responsible for developing 11 Regional Energy Strategic Plans (RESPs) across Great Britain. The regional RESP content is available at this link.

Our Central England based team (covering Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Swindon) will work with other NESO teams and organisations at a local level (local actors), including local government and gas and electricity networks, in developing the Central England RESP.

As the RESP Analyst for Central England, you will contribute to the development of the region's RESP by providing robust supporting analysis and contributing to a range of projects. This will include undertaking quantitative and qualitative analysis of key aspects of the whole energy system in your region as well as supporting the central RESP hub team in their analysis and collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders. You will report to the RESP Regional Manager and will work closely with other members of the regional team. Having an understanding and lived experience of Central England will be key.

This role will initially be based from home but move to hybrid working from home and the Central England office once opened. Some travel will be expected (e.g., to NESO Warwick Office for central team workshops or within regions to meet with key stakeholders). We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

About us

The creation of National Energy System Operator (NESO) is driven by an urgent need to unify and optimise our approach to energy. A more integrated and coordinated strategy is needed to meet the unprecedented challenges of climate change, ensuring secure energy supply, and keeping costs manageable for consumers.

Join us and empower your potential, energise our team, and be part of something bigger. Your energy, our future, together.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead on individual pieces of analysis, being responsible for structuring and project managing their own work, managing their own time, providing regular progress updates and delivering work of the required quality to meet deadlines.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of key aspects of the whole energy system in your region; implementing and refining analysis being used elsewhere in RESP to reflect your region's needs and to reflect emerging best-practise.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the RESP regional and central teams, and with other teams across NESO.
  • Confidently interact with a broad range of external stakeholders. Support the identification and prioritisation of new stakeholders to engage.
  • Design, support and assist in facilitating workshops and other group working sessions to progress the development and delivery of RESP in your region.
  • Produce and deliver clear, concise reports and slide packs in presenting the results of your and others’ analysis to progress the RESP.

About you

We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need visionary minds like yours to join us on this transformative journey. In this case, we’re looking for someone who:

  • The ability to undertake quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and synthesise and communicate insights to a wide range of audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience of tracking and reporting on project implementation.
  • A conscientious approach to defining and managing their own work, with a proactive approach to raising issues or concerns early.
  • Technical understanding or ability to learn energy industry standard methods and assumptions for analysing the environmental, social and financial inputs, impacts and outputs of projects.
  • An understanding and curiosity in planning for a ‘whole energy’ system.
  • An ability to translate complex information into succinct reports and presentations.
  • An inquisitive mind with the ability to join the dots and a willingness to learn about new areas of work.

About what you’ll get

A competitive salary between £47,000 - £56,000 per annum – dependent on experience and capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

As we work towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more affordable future for all, we also work towards creating a place for our teammates to belong, with professional and personal growth and positive well-being.
