An opportunity has become available for a Telecoms Technical Specialist reporting to the Telecoms Design Manager located at Tipton or another suitable location within West Midlands. The Technical Specialist will work on the specification and design across our Core Communications Networks, working with our Network Management Centre (NMC), Operations, Project Delivery and Commercial teams to deliver a highly reliable, resilient and secure solution in a fast and evolving space. You’ll be responsible for managing your own time to achieve targets set by the business and our customers, focusing on the Communications Networks that primarily supports the Control and Visibility of the high‑voltage electricity network. As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and is subject to business need. Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.
Main Responsibilities
- Undertake technical analysis, evaluation, design and reporting of equipment, products and services, and make recommendations of their suitability for incorporation into our Communications Networks.
- Manage your own working time to ensure that objectives and projects are completed in the most efficient manner.
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, customers, suppliers and other external organisations.
- Work safely and in accordance with approved procedures and techniques.
- Provide technical support to customers and liaise with colleagues to solve complex issues where necessary.
- Assist with policy, standard techniques and technical reports on specific products within the team.
The Ideal Candidate
You will be required to carry out technical design and planning work focusing primarily on our Core Communications Networks, for example, Fibre, DWDM, IP, Firewalls, MPLS‑TP, SDH & PDH Networks to name a few. The role will involve travel across all National Grid Distribution regions, managing your own diary with occasional travel outside of the area including overnight stays. Ideally qualified to Higher BTEC or equivalent in Telecommunications or Electrical Engineering, however applications are also encouraged from colleagues who consider themselves suitable to make a success of this opportunity. Evidence of your qualifications will be required. Successful applicants may be required to undertake standby duties in accordance with an agreed rota. As the post you are applying for attracts a National Security Vetting clearance there are further eligibility requirements. To meet national security vetting requirements you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years for Security Clearance (SC) prior to the date of application. You may still be considered if, for example: you have been serving overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government, you were studying abroad, or you were living overseas with parents.
