Job Introduction
An opportunity has become available for a Communications Engineer based in Church Village or Ty Coch reporting to the Telecoms Operations Team Manager (South West and South Wales).
The Communications Engineer will be responsible for the installation, commissioning and maintenance of our Telecoms Networks in South Wales, working with our Network Management Centre (NMC), Design and Commercial teams to deliver a reliable, resilient and secure solution in a fast and evolving space.

  • Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main Responsibilities

You’ll be hands-on, responsible for managing your own time to achieve targets set by the business and our customers, working on the Telecoms network that primarily supports the Control and Visibility of the high-voltage electricity network. You will:

  • Carry out the installation, operation and maintenance of Telecoms Networks within the designated region.
  • Work with contractors and when necessary, witness acceptance tests.
  • Managing your own working time to ensure that objectives and projects are completed in the most efficient manner.
  • Work with colleagues and customers to ensure a continuity of service.
  • Work safely and in accordance with agreed approved procedures and techniques.
  • Provide technical support to customers and where necessary liaise with colleagues to solve complex issues.

Ideal Candidate
You would ideally have experience as a Telecoms Engineer, so you\’ll have an understanding of our Network Elements. If you haven’t worked with us before, then you’ll have an appreciation of the electrical Network we support – perhaps you’ve worked in Safety Critical environments before. Strong communication skills are key, so you can coordinate jobs and clearly explain issues. As you’ll be in control of your diary, we’ll need you to be resilient, organised and able to prioritise your workload. Team players thrive in this role, and you’ll have experience using iPads, computers and our additional software.
To apply, you’ll ideally have experience with DWDM, IP, MPLS, SDH, PDH and Microwave equipment. You should be committed to providing outstanding customer service and have an ability to communicate well with both colleagues and customers. Ideally qualified to BTEC or equivalent in Telecommunications or Electrical Engineering or have extensive relevant experience however, applications are also encouraged from staff that are able to demonstrate that they have a technical background and the motivation to make a success of this opportunity. The successful applicant will be required to undertake standby duties in accordance with an agreed rota. We’ll need to see evidence of your qualifications.

As the post you are applying for attracts a National Security Vetting clearance there are further eligibility requirements, information can be found on the gov.uk website. To meet national security vetting requirements you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years for Security Clearance (SC) prior to the date of application. There are exceptions to this however and examples of these include:

  • You have been serving oversees with HM forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government
  • You were studying abroad
  • You were living overseas with parents
