About the role

Join us and drive innovative cable engineering solutions for our transmission network.

Strategic Infrastructure is developing and constructing a series of HVDC projects along the east coast of Great Britain. These projects play a vital part in achieving the UK Government’s ambition of connecting 50GW of offshore wind by 2030.

As a Senior Cables Engineer, you\’ll oversee the scoping, development and technical assurance for new cable assets supporting our growing HVDC technology portfolio. The principal value created by this role is the identification and management of cable engineering opportunities and risks so that the overall business risk profile is suitably managed.

To create asset value, we require a cable engineering design, installation and testing plan which underpins the quality and timely delivery of a complex onshore and offshore electricity transmission portfolio. The role is designed to build upon the good work already underway and support the implementation of an engineering capability growth plan.

As a Subject Matter Expert, you\’ll establish consistent ways of working with Asset Operations, JV partners and OEM’s to create and embed world-class engineering practices across our growing portfolio of transmission assets. You\’ll be a thought leader who is passionate about creating sustainable cable engineering solutions to shape the asset management strategy.

This role welcomes applicants UK wide, and we offer hybrid working from office and home. You\’ll be flexible to regular travel throughout England and Scotland, depending on the project.

Key accountabilities

  • Provide technical and asset management leadership in the area of high voltage cables.
  • Develop and implement strategies for the management of onshore and offshore HVAC & HVDC cable systems.
  • Lead in the scoping, development and execution of cable system projects, for example planning and managing subsea cable surveys.
  • Ensure the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of cable solutions – be they physical assets, digital assets and their associated construction and maintenance methodologies.
  • Lead and shape National Grid\’s relationships with key external stakeholders (e.g. regulators, professional bodies, suppliers, international engineering institutions, academic institutions).

About you

  • Good technical understanding of High Voltage Cables, both AC & DC, Onshore and Offshore.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of Asset Management.
  • Ability to assist with the commissioning of HV cables to recognised standards and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of strategy, policy and procedures development and implementation.
  • Project delivery experience on a full range of complex, multi-interface projects.
  • Experience of working with procurement and suppliers to introduce new ways of working and sustainable products.
  • Able to think beyond convention; employing strategic frameworks and concepts, engineering, asset and market knowledge to a range of new and novel applications to derive value and to solve business issues.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of gaining a high degree of credibility and influencing teams.

What you\’ll get

A competitive salary between £70,000 – £85,000 – dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a job requirement car, a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
