About Us

At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it’s so much more than that. National Grid supplies us with the environment to make it happen. As we generate momentum in the energy transition for all, we don’t plan on leaving any of our customers in the dark.

This role is variable based. You will be expected to travel to multiple operational and delivery sites and locations throughout your working week based on project demands. The projects we are currently recruiting for are based within North Wales and Lincolnshire.

Job Purpose

Great Britain’s electricity infrastructure is undergoing a vital transformation to deliver a cleaner, greener, net‑zero energy system. National Grid is at the forefront of this, delivering one of the largest infrastructure investment programmes in the UK, with HVDC converter stations playing a critical role in enabling offshore wind, interconnection and long‑term system resilience. As a Project Engineer – HVDC Civils, you will take a key technical role in delivering the Employer’s civil scope across HVDC converter station projects. With a focus on early works, site preparation and complex contractor interfaces, you’ll ensure civil works are planned, integrated and executed safely and efficiently. Working at the interface between Employer‑delivered civils and OEM EPC contractor scopes, you’ll provide technical ownership and coordination, helping to underpin the successful delivery of major HVDC infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as the technical focal point for the Employer’s civil scope, including earthworks, enabling works and site preparation
  • Support the development, review and assurance of civil designs, specifications and scopes of work
  • Engineering lead for scope of project and will work closely with the project technical lead
  • Coordinate critical technical interfaces between:
    • Employer’s civil works contractor
    • Converter OEM’s EPC contractor
    • Electrical, mechanical and HVDC engineering teams
  • Ensure alignment of levels, layouts, tolerances and interfaces ahead of main construction activities
  • Support the management of technical risks, construction sequencing and access strategies
  • Review design submissions, method statements and interface documentation
  • Contribute to HAZID/HAZOP studies, constructability reviews and temporary works considerations
  • Provide engineering support during site execution, resolving interface issues and design queries
  • Capture and apply lessons learned to improve future HVDC civil delivery

About You

  • Experience delivering or supporting major infrastructure or power projects, ideally within substations, HVDC or complex industrial environments (civil backgrounds from other sectors also welcomed)
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, including earthworks, site formation, drainage, foundations or enabling works
  • Experience working within multi‑contractor delivery models, with a clear understanding of interfaces and dependencies
  • Confident reviewing civil designs, temporary works and construction methodologies
  • Comfortable working at the boundary between multiple disciplines and contractors
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • A proactive, risk‑based mindset with a focus on safety, quality and delivery

What You’ll Get

A competitive salary between £65,000 – £78,000 dependent on capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
