National Grid is hiring a Project Director - We are recruiting for 3 vacancies, with positions based in the North Region, Midlands and London. This role offers hybrid working, allowing you to split your time between the office and home though you will be required to travel within the UK depending on the project.

As owners of Wales and England’s electricity transmission network we are dedicated to achieving Net Zero. In order to make the transition to clean energy we need the right people to help. We’re looking for a Project Director to lead a team and manage the planning and delivery of construction projects. This is a job for someone who likes fast-paced environments and is excited by the challenge of delivering major infrastructure work within short timescales and a complex system. As a leader you will be dealing with the multidisciplinary aspects of our transformational projects. One day you might be dealing with a needs case for an early-stage project, the next resolving a procurement or contract issue on a project in delivery, the following day working on a leadership issue such as talent development. You will also be involved in land issues, stakeholder management, briefing local authorities or government bodies, negotiating with Ofgem or suppliers, making sure the scope of a project is right, and managing risk, financing and scheduling. You’ll be working in a trusting, highly collaborative and safe environment. What You’ll Do

  • Accountability for the definition, delivery and successful completion of high value, complex infrastructure projects; safely, to time, budget and quality.
  • Drive a safety culture to achieve and uphold the highest levels of health and safety.
  • Drive the throughput of projects from initial customer interest through to physical connection onto the transmission network and project close out.
  • Develop, administer, and manage intricate, multi-faceted budgets and investment plans while undertaking regular cost and productivity analysis to track and evaluate performance.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure regulatory funding for a range of customer projects.
  • Recruit, develop and lead diverse, multi-disciplined teams across multiple projects and locations.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, direction and leadership to the project team, while ensuring resources meet budget and business plan objectives.
  • The implementation of opportunities and the management of risk to deliver all agreed outputs within the appropriate regulatory framework.
  • Operate as the key interface and establish collaborative communication channels with all high influence stakeholders, including customers, contractors, and local and parliamentary authorities.
  • Ensure project milestones are achieved or surpassed.
  • Direct and integrate the activities of multiple project operations, ensuring that project efforts are cohesive, consistent, and effective in supporting National Grid’s vision, goals, and strategic plan.

About You

  • Experience of working with HV networks / Power systems, customer application process and customer management is beneficial.
  • Considerable breadth and depth of proven experience in construction projects or programme and contract management.
  • Significant experience working at a senior level within a construction business.
  • Executive experience leading large, complex programmes of work, enabling project teams to operate innovatively, effectively and efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of leading and influencing large, devolved teams, and gaining support and commitment from a wider operational group.
  • Customer management experience, able to influence customers and partner organisations.
  • Relationship management experience, driving commercial value and performance through major contracts.
  • Experience of leading change and business improvement within a complex organisation, programme or project.
  • Managing complex commercial arrangements, including setting up, negotiating, and managing large contracts.

Financial Control - Experience Required

  • In depth financial experience of managing a portfolio of projects including those with large capital budgets.
  • In depth experience of managing large operating costs.

A competitive salary – dependent on capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a company car or allowance, a bonus of up to 40% of your salary for stretch performance, and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
