The Offshore Coordination project is a key part of the NESO's plan to facilitate net zero. This exciting project was set up with the OTNR (Offshore Transmission Network Review), to tackle the complex issues around offshore connections. We are continuing that work to find optimisations across planned and future offshore wind projects across GB.
The NESO has developed a Holistic Network Design (HND) which will find the best way to connect offshore wind generation to meet the government's 2030 targets. The team are now focusing on the second round of this design, which will build on the original HND by incorporating additional wind generation and new generation and demand scenarios. The output of the process will be a set of recommendations for how the offshore and onshore networks should develop, taking account of economic, deliverability & operability, environment, and community considerations. In this team, you'll be able to see your work contribute to an offshore and onshore network design which benefits consumers and communities and play your part in developing a low carbon future.
This role can be based from Wokingham, Warwick, Glasgow, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain's electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.
The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.
The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

Key AccountabilitiesOffshore Coordination has accountabilities for both onshore and offshore designs. In this role, you will be able to work with offshore designs, the Centralised Strategic Network Planning (CSNP) programme and various other internal and external stakeholders. There is an expectation that the role will involve proposing design options and close collaboration with Transmission Owners (TOs) in the development of design options.
You will participate in the following activities:
- Developing onshore and offshore network designs.
- Working with economic engineers to undertake modelling of the proposed network.
- Collaborating with energy insights and SSEP (Strategic Spatial Energy Planning) teams to plan for future energy pathways.
- Analysing the different designs from a deliverability and operability perspective.
- Understanding the impact on both the onshore and offshore network.
- Working with the multiple NESO teams to seek their feedback on the proposed network.
- Working with impacted stakeholders (including transmission owners and wind generation developers) to discuss the proposed network.
- Technical report writing.

- Knowledge of the GB electricity transmission network, including power system operation, Grid Code and Security and Quality of Supply Standards (SQSS).
- Knowledge of the existing network planning process, for example Network Options Assessment (NOA) and Connections processes.
- Familiarity with power system simulation packages such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD and integrated scripting functionality to automate analysis and program development.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate complex technical information.
- Proven ability to build relationships and work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
A competitive salary between Β£50,000 - Β£70,000 per annum - dependent on experience and capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
