Unleash your superpower and bring energy to life.

National Grid is hiring a Power System Expert for our Customer and Network Development Team based in Warwick.

About The Role

We\’re looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Power System Technical Expert to join us on our journey to create the electricity network of the future. You’ll join National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) as the technical authority on the design of the electricity transmission system in England and Wales, across all timescales. That means not only will you be supporting the technical challenges of today in delivering electricity to millions of homes and businesses through our infrastructure but also be at the forefront of delivering the network that will help to decarbonise a nation and help to leave our planet in a state where future generations can thrive.

You\’ll oversee and approve the electrical design of the largest overhaul of the England and Wales electricity grid in generations, ensuring that new technologies and innovative design strategies are consistently applied to our evolving transmission network, whilst ensuring that it continually meets the needs of our customers, consumers and stakeholders.

You’ll use your breadth of transmission knowledge to competently challenge and evolve existing practices, procedures, codes and regulations to ensure a fit for future network design that continues to deliver electricity safely, reliably and efficiently.

If you are looking for a new challenge and want to be part a critical and once-in-a-lifetime plan to upgrade our electricity network to meet net zero – come and join our Network Design Team in National Grid Electricity Transmission.

What You\’ll Do

  • Lead on the overall design and development of the transmission network, in line with the NETS SQSS, Grid Code, STC and relevant transmission procedures, guidance documents, industry standards and customer needs.
  • Identify the need for, instigate and lead the development and evolution of Grid Code and SQSS requirements at the required pace of change to evolve the electricity network and adopt new technology to meet UK decarbonisation and electrification ambitions, whilst maintaining the integrity and reliability of the electricity grid for consumers.
  • Actively identify emerging risks on the transmission network (including those associated with introduction of new technology) and work with internal and external stakeholders, to determine their impact and potential mitigation.
  • Liaise with the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to quantify transmission system requirements, contributing to strategies that minimize risk exposure while facilitating future network development.

What You\’ll Need

Educated to Degree level in electrical engineering (or equivalent), and preferably a higher degree or qualification in power system engineering, you’ll have a thorough knowledge of infrastructure development and design issues involved in the planning and operation of electricity transmission networks.

You\’ll need to be a Chartered member of a relevant professional organisation or be able to demonstrate extensive technical experience to a similar level.

You\’ll need an in-depth understanding of power system networks, power system analysis and modelling across a broad range of areas, coupled with a detailed knowledge of the assets and components forming the GB transmission system.

A comprehensive knowledge of the GB industry codes and standards in the context of design requirements and impact on network operation is essential, as is a strong appreciation of electrical behaviour and performance of transmission systems in various conditions.

You\’ll also have a strong understanding of electrical infrastructure investment processes and relevant procedures in relation to network design, a working knowledge of cost benefit analysis and its use to develop investment cases, as well as a good understanding of the regulatory framework and its influence on the technical design of the network.

In addition, we are looking for someone with experience of the following:

  • Building and sustaining relationships within a technically-focussed environment and across the industry.
  • Reviewing and challenging technical requirements across all power system areas.
  • Coaching and developing technical skills of professional engineers across power system topics.
  • Presenting detailed technical information in a way understandable to non-technical audiences.

What You\’ll Get

Salary range – £67,000 – £85,000 depending on skills and experience

  • An annual performance bonus of up to 15% of your eligible earnings in the performance year
  • 37-hour week, with Hybrid working model between Home and Office
  • 28 days annual leave, plus eight statutory days.
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme – we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave â so long as it is relevant to your role.
  • Access to several flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to numerous apps which support health, fitness, and wellbeing.
