National Grid is hiring a Data Culture Lead to join our Technology team, based at our Warwick office, with hybrid working. You’ll play a key role in shaping and embedding a strong data‑driven culture across the organisation, enabling teams to make informed decisions and maximise the value of data to support critical operations across our enterprise.

About The Role

With over 33,000 colleagues across National Grid, building a strong, inclusive, and value‑driven data culture is critical to how we operate today—and how we’ll succeed tomorrow. As Data Culture Lead, you’ll play a pivotal role in elevating data capability to power the next chapter of our organisation.

Sitting at the heart of a rapidly growing and forward‑thinking Data Office, you’ll help lead a profound cultural transformation—reshaping how decisions are made, how innovation happens, and how value is created across the business. Your mission is clear and ambitious: to embed data at the centre of everything we do. From championing data and AI literacy to driving lasting behavioural change, you’ll ensure data‑driven decision‑making becomes part of our everyday DNA.

Working across business units and leadership teams, you’ll inspire confidence and curiosity in data, shining a spotlight on pioneering initiatives and breakthrough thinking. You’ll help translate advanced technologies—from generative AI to emerging frontier innovations—into meaningful, organisation‑wide impact. Through engaging initiatives, storytelling, and strategic influence, you’ll build consistent, confident ways of working with data, empowering our people and enabling smarter, faster, and more impactful outcomes for our customers and communities.

What you’ll do

  • Shape a Powerful Data Culture
    • Design and own an end‑to‑end data culture strategy, creating practical frameworks, playbooks, and behaviours that embed responsible AI and data‑driven decision‑making.
    • Lead high‑impact initiatives that build awareness, shift behaviours, and embed sustainable data practices across the organisation.
    • Partner with HR, L&D, and senior leaders to embed data culture into onboarding, performance, and development.
    • Champion the organisation’s data culture externally through thought leadership, partnerships, and recognition, strengthening our reputation in responsible data and AI.
  • Inspire Engagement & Capability
    • Bring the data culture narrative to life through clear, compelling communications, from campaigns and events to storytelling for diverse audiences.
    • Scale data and AI literacy in collaboration with the Data & AI Academy and L&D, building confidence and capability.
    • Develop and sustain communities of practice that encourage collaboration, learning, and innovation.
    • Lead DataConnect, our community of data professionals and change‑makers, ensuring it delivers real value and cultural momentum.
  • Drive Meaningful Change
    • Coach leaders and managers to be visible role models of data‑driven behaviours.
    • Support change initiatives that embed new mindsets, habits, and ways of working, including adoption of AI tools.
    • Build change capability through practical guidance, tools, and behaviour‑informed approaches.
    • Identify and address cultural and operational barriers to adoption in partnership with leaders.
  • Measure What Matters
    • Define and track KPIs and metrics to measure behaviours, maturity, and progress against strategic goals.
    • Use insight—including AI‑supported analysis—to continuously improve data culture.
    • Embed cultural metrics into programme evaluation so behavioural impact is visible and understood.
    • Create clear, accessible insights and visualisations to surface trends, risks, and opportunities for senior leaders and governance forums.

About you

  • Proven experience leading colleague communications that drive engagement, behaviour change, and adoption — not just awareness.
  • A strong background working in digital, technology, data, or AI‑enabled environments, confident operating alongside technical specialists.
  • Deep understanding of how to translate complex technical and data concepts into clear, compelling narratives for diverse, non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience designing and executing end‑to‑end communications strategies and campaigns, from insight and planning through to delivery and measurement.
  • A confident and creative content creator, skilled across storytelling, campaigns, events, digital channels, and community‑led engagement.
  • Demonstrated success growing engagement around a topic or cultural agenda, building momentum and sustained participation over time.
  • Strong track record of stakeholder engagement and facilitation, able to influence senior leaders, practitioners, and change agents.
  • Experience partnering with HR, L&D, and technology teams to embed communications into onboarding, capability building, and change programmes.
  • Solid understanding of change management principles, with hands‑on experience supporting shifts in mindset, behaviours, and ways of working.
  • Comfortable using insight, feedback, and metrics to shape communication strategies and continuously improve impact.
  • Collaborative, proactive, and resilient, with the credibility to challenge thinking and coach others in data‑driven and change‑led approaches.
