The GB energy system is undergoing a rapid and unprecedented transformation as we work towards Clean Power by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050. The distribution network sits at the heart of this shift, enabling the connection of thousands of electric vehicles, heat pumps and significant volumes of new solar and wind generation. To meet this challenge, we’ll be expanding and reinforcing our network at a scale not seen this century.

As one of the UK’s Distribution Network Operators, we play a critical role in the Great Grid Upgrade—supporting the delivery of accelerated strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects across England and Wales. These major infrastructure upgrades are essential to meeting the nation’s future energy needs.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer (Senior Authorised Person) to join our newly formed ASTI Projects team within Field Operations. In this role, you’ll be working at the forefront of our major projects programme, helping to deliver high‑impact infrastructure that will support the energy transition for decades to come.

Reporting to a Senior Project Manager, you’ll provide specialist engineering expertise across ASTI projects up to and including 132kV. You’ll work closely with Project Managers to deliver a wide range of activities including scoping and development, design reviews, installing and commissioning assets while ensuring our work meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance.

This hands‑on role also includes managing contractors, supporting network operations, shaping policies and technical practices, and driving continuous improvement. As a trusted technical expert, you’ll work with colleagues, customers, and a variety of external stakeholders, all while helping to develop and mentor others within the team. It’s a unique opportunity to influence the future of our network and play a part in the UK’s energy transition.

We offer flexibility on location, with the role based from any NGED depot within our licence areas: East Midlands, South West, West Midlands or Wales—agreed with the successful candidate.

As part of our hybrid working approach, this role provides a blend of office, site and home working.

Main Responsibilities

  • Deliver and support ASTI projects up to and including 132kV across plant, civil, overhead and underground systems, ensuring safe, compliant and high‑quality outcomes.
  • Install and commission plant, apparatus, control and protection systems, and diagnose technical issues on existing assets.
  • Act as a technical expert—providing guidance to colleagues, supporting policy development, staying current with industry advances, and representing the team at seminars and specialist groups.
  • Lead and support others, including mentoring, identifying training needs, and delivering technical training where required.
  • Collaborate effectively with Project Managers, other Project Engineers, contractors and stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery and excellent customer service.
  • Carry out network operations up to and including 132kV, including issuing safety documentation, assessing site risks, and promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Manage project delivery activities, including allocating work, checking quality and compliance, approving contractor timesheets/invoices, and ensuring tools and equipment remain safe and serviceable.
  • Drive continuous improvement by introducing new techniques, recommending performance enhancements, and adapting flexibly to changing priorities.
  • Represent the company professionally, responding to customer enquiries and escalating more complex issues appropriately.

Ideal Candidate

Ideally you’ll be a Senior Authorised Person (SAP) with operational authorisation up to 132kV. As a minimum, you must already be SAP authorised at both 33kV and 66kV, with practical experience and authorisation gained within a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) environment.

You’ll bring proven experience in high‑hazard industries where safety is critical, along with strong knowledge of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM).

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a practical knowledge of cables, overhead lines, protection and control systems, including the commissioning of such equipment and should also be familiar with specifications for plant.

You will have a Level 3 City & Guilds 2339 and if not already attained will be required to undertake HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering.

We are looking for someone who is self‑motivated, adaptable, and able to work autonomously under pressure. The role demands the highest standards of quality while maintaining a safe and disciplined working environment.

You must also be mobile throughout the network services area, hold a full and valid UK driving licence, and be prepared to undertake standby duties in accordance with a pre‑determined rota.

  • Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Applicants who have applied in the last 6 months need not re‑apply.
