National Grid is hiring a Lead Product Manager for our Electricity Distribution (NGED) department. This role can be located in any of our offices with flexible, hybrid working options available.
About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Product Management, the Lead Product Manager is responsible for composing product roadmap through research, vision-setting, business alignment and prioritisation. The Lead Product Manager is a proactive leader who prioritises business and technical requirements, outlining what success looks like. Responsible for the product’s long‑term vision, and for aligning the product roadmap with the company’s strategic initiatives, commercial objectives and customer needs. This role is also expected to be a subject matter expert in their respective discipline, fostering collaboration, continuous improvement, and adaptability within the organisation, as a facilitator, mentor, and enabler of Agile principles. A person who advocates for a culture of agility, encouraging all to embrace Agile values and practices. The role also has accountability to deputise for their line manager (whenever necessary) and is expected to support the product owner community while also driving a positive culture (primarily through role‑modeling) across the Technology department and wider business.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and maintain a high-level product roadmap that aligns with overall business strategy and long‑term vision.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to prioritise features and initiatives that deliver the highest business value.
- Balance innovation with sustainability, ensuring strategic initiatives meet commercial objectives.
- Regularly assess the competitive landscape, customer feedback, and market trends to inform product strategy.
- Lead the prioritisation of the commercial product roadmap based on business goals, customer needs, and resource availability.
- Collaborate with the commercial team to ensure the roadmap reflects business priorities such as revenue growth, cost optimisation, and market expansion.
- Work closely with the Product Owner to ensure alignment between commercial goals and technical feasibility.
- Act as the primary liaison between internal and external stakeholders across the business unit and wider group.
- Manage stakeholder expectations, ensuring transparency on roadmap progress and decision‑making processes.
- Regularly update stakeholders on product performance, upcoming features, and release timelines.
- Facilitate workshops, demos, and discussions to gather input and validate product concepts.
- Work closely with the Product Owner and development teams to balance the delivery of customer‑facing features with technical improvements and technical debt.
About You
- Knowledge of Product Lifecycle: Deep understanding of the product development lifecycle, from discovery and design through to delivery and optimisation.
- Analytical Mindset: Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesize data, research, and insights into actionable strategies.
- Customer‑Centric Focus: Strong understanding of customer needs, with a focus on delivering products that provide exceptional value.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with good interpersonal skills to effectively convey ideas and updates to diverse and varied group sizes of stakeholders.
- Influencing Skills: Understand audience and make the right case for the right person, using research and data to form strong and well‑supported points of view to back up their opinion and decisions.
- Technical Acumen: Adequate understanding of technical processes and software development to effectively communicate with engineers and make informed decisions.
- Problem‑Solving: Ability to address challenges and roadblocks creatively and effectively.
- Commercial Awareness: Solid grasp of financial metrics, market trends, and business performance indicators.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional teams and drive product development in line with business strategy.
What you’ll get
A competitive salary between £77,000 – £88,000 – dependent on capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 15%.
