Job Purpose
Electricity Transmission (ET) is navigating through an exciting time as we evolve to meet Net Zero targets for 2050. By joining our Asset Engineering team, you will support the development and lifecycle management of HVDC/AC Protection & Control assets across the electricity transmission system in England and Wales.
Working at the heart of National Grid Electricity Transmission's Asset Engineering team within Asset Operations, you'll play a key role in enabling the energy transition, delivering the Great Grid Upgrade and supporting the safe and reliable operation of the electricity network.
We're recruiting experienced engineers with specialist expertise in either HVDC or AC Protection & Control asset management. In this pivotal role, you'll provide expert technical guidance throughout the asset lifecycle, developing policies, standards and strategies that support long-term asset performance, reliability and innovation.
The role offers opportunities to work with leading manufacturers, assess developing technologies, witness equipment testing and represent National Grid within the wider industry.
What you'll do
- Provide detailed technical engineering and asset management expertise relating fot Protection & Control related to either to HVDC or AC systems.
- Create and amend policies, procedures, technical specifications, work specifications, internal standards and technical guidance.
- Support the development of technical specifications, policies and asset strategies, identifying effective intervention strategies and innovation opportunities.
- Assess the suitability and limitations of simulation and modelling tools, supporting continuous improvement in capability and accuracy.
- Lead and support Type Registration and Factory Acceptance Testing activities in line with relevant procedures.
- Engage with external stakeholders, suppliers and regulatory bodies.
- Represent National Grid at relevant industry forums, committees and conferences.
- Train, coach, mentor and support less experienced members of the team.
About you
You'll be a self-starter who is eager to develop both business and technical skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and provide technical leadership.
Essential
- Proven experience within either HVDC/AC Protection & Control engineering and asset management.
- Engage with suppliers to inform and influence end-to-end lifecycle management of assets (including type registration, operational & maintenance support, obsolescence management and refurbishment/replacement of assets.
- For Protection & Control specialism:
- Experience in the specification, design, development and lifecycle management of protection and interfacing equipment.
- Experience using tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD and/or RTDS.
- For HVDC specialism:
- Experience in the specification, design, development, testing, maintenance and/or lifecycle management of HVDC converter stations and associated equipment.
- A numerate degree or demonstrable experience within a relevant STEM discipline.
- Strong understanding of asset management principles.
- Membership of, or the ability to become a member of, a relevant professional body.
- Ability to work effectively to challenging deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strategic thinking capability, combined with practical operational awareness.
Desirable
- Knowledge of asset management systems such as IBM Maximo.
- Institute of Asset Management Principles of Asset Management certification.
- Chartered status with a relevant professional institution.
