National Grid is hiring an Azure Cloud Engineer on a permanent basis. This position can be based in Warwick or London. This role is designated as hybrid, with an expectation of 3-4 days per month in the office. Requirements may vary based on business needs and company policy.
As Azure Infrastructure Engineer, you will be responsible for configuring, automating and deploying Azure platform services using Infrastructure as Code (primarily Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines built with GitHub Actions. You will support both central platform enablement and a federated delivery model by helping teams deploy and operate Azure services well, consistently, and securely.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of the UK’s transition to net zero, enabling the products and services that will support the transition to a net‑zero energy system.
What you will do:
- Deploy, configure, and update Azure services using Terraform
- Build and maintain Azure platform components used by multiple teams, including shared services and environment foundations
- Apply practical knowledge of Azure networking concepts (such as routing, subnets, and integration points) as part of platform provisioning
- Create and maintain reusable Terraform modules and configuration patterns
- Support consistent deployments across environments (e.g. dev, test, UAT, prod)
- Ensure infrastructure changes are version‑controlled, reviewed, and traceable through code‑first workflows
- Design and implement GitHub Actions workflows to orchestrate Terraform lifecycle steps (init, plan, apply)
- Embed automated validation and quality checks into pipelines
- Support safe promotion of infrastructure changes using pull‑request‑based workflows
- Implement automation that supports operational hygiene and reduces manual intervention
- Promote good cloud hygiene, including resource grouping, tagging discipline, and cost awareness
- Support tagging standards and basic FinOps principles to enable cost visibility and accountability
- Contribute to logging, monitoring, and observability patterns where required
- Work closely with platform colleagues and delivery teams to understand needs and unblock deployments
- Produce lightweight documentation and runbooks to support self‑service adoption of platform patterns
- Willingness to participate in on‑call or shift‑based support may be required over time
About you:
- Hands‑on experience deploying Azure infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code
- Strong preference for Terraform; experience with Bicep or ARM acceptable with solid IaC fundamentals
- Strong Git experience and confidence working with GitHub
- Practical experience creating and maintaining GitHub Actions pipelines
- Comfortable working across multiple teams in a consultative, enabling role
