2026 Graduate Electrical Engineer – Electricity Distribution
National Grid is at the heart of the UK energy network, keeping people connected and society moving. We develop, own and maintain the physical infrastructure—pylons, cables and substations—needed to move electricity generated from wind farms and power sources around the country. Every time a phone is plugged in or a switch is turned on, we play a part, connecting you to the electricity you need, while leading the transformation toward a greener future.
Role
The Graduate Electrical Engineer will join NGED’s Major Projects team, responsible for operating, maintaining and developing the 132 kV network across the Midlands, South‑West and Wales. You will work on overhead lines, underground cables and substations, and deliver asset replacement programmes, network reinforcement and new connections from 11 kV to 132 kV. The role is technical and dynamic, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of colleagues and contractors.
What You’ll Do
- Project Management Fundamentals – Learn how to plan, execute, and deliver complex infrastructure projects.
- Safety and CDM Regulations – Understand the principles of safe working and compliance with Construction (Design and Management) regulations.
- Project Finances – Get involved in budgeting, cost control, and financial reporting.>
- Network Risk Management – Learn how to assess and mitigate risks associated with network operations and upgrades.
- Procurement and Contractor Management – Support the selection and oversight of contractors and suppliers.
- Network Operations – Work towards becoming a Senior Authorised Person (SAP), gaining the skills to operate and manage high‑voltage systems.
- Commissioning Activities – Assist in the testing and commissioning of electrical plant and protection systems.
Our Graduate Programme
The 18‑month graduate programme offers a tailored development pathway with a mix of in‑person and virtual development sessions, 121 coaching, and mentorship. You will complete three 6‑month placements across the UK, deepening your understanding of your speciality while broadening your knowledge of our business. At the end of the programme you will return to your initial placement area to kickstart your superpowered career.
Requirements
- Minimum 2:2 degree in Electrical Engineering, or working towards graduation.
- Full‑valid UK driving licence.
- Flexibility to travel within the role and across rotations; required travel to sites, substations, depots and training centres.
- Live within a 30‑minute drive of CF38 1BN (provide evidence in application).
Benefits

- £2,000 bonus, once joined and started on programme.
- £2,400 payment on successful completion of the programme.

- Up to £200 per month accommodation allowance and additional annual leave for moving between placements.
